Birth Doula

Hi ladies!  I am training to be a Birth Doula and am offering my services for free to three lucky mama's who will be giving birth before the end of the year.  In order for me to become certified, I will need to attend three births.  They can be natural, medicated or c-section.  As a doula, I support the mother and partner according to their specific needs and what they envision for their unique birth experience.

What is a doula?  She is a stable source of support for the mother and partner during their birth journey.

Re: Birth Doula

  • Oh, bummer! I just had the most fabulous water birth 12 days ago... would have loved to have had a free doula!  Doulas are amazing - I've used one for both of my births.  Good luck!
  • We had a birth doula, and it was a great experience.  She helped me stay motivated when labor got moving, and she was a wonderful advocate for us in the hospital - especially during shift changes.  It made my husband's job a lot easier because he had someone supporting him when people questioned our choice to try for an unmedicated birth.

Also, I've met Angela quite a few times, and she would be a very supportive and confident person to have during labor.

  • Thought I would also post this for anyone that would like to know, what is a doula?  :)  And what do they do?

imageWhat is a doula? imageThe word "doula" comes from the ancient Greek meaning "a woman who serves" and is now used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth; or who provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period.Studies have shown that when doulas attend birth, labors are shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier and they breastfeed more easily.A Birth DoulaRecognizes birth as a key experience the mother will remember all her lifeUnderstands the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in laborAssists the woman in preparing for and carrying out her plans for birthStays with the woman throughout the laborProvides emotional support, physical comfort measures and an objective viewpoint, as well as helping the woman get the information she needs to make informed decisionFacilitates communication between the laboring woman, her partner and her clinical care providersPerceives her role as nurturing and protecting the woman's memory of the birth experienceAllows the woman's partner to participate at his/her comfort levelA birth doula certified by DONA International is designated by the initials CD(DONA).Research evidence shows that the quality services of a postpartum doula can ease the transition that comes with the addition of a baby to a family, improve parental satisfaction and reduce the risk of mood disorders.https://dona.org/mothers/index.php
