3rd Trimester

Birth/Labor Story - long

I went into labor Tuesday night with small contractions at about 10 minute intervals. Laid down for an hour at 11 PM and Dh called the hospital and told us to come in. We were admited at 1:30 and the nurse had me do some activities to start making my contractions a bit stronger. I was a keeper!

The doctor came in at 8:30, broke my water and I was 3 cm. I was a little scared as I had not had my epi yet and I know that once the water is broken they come a lot stronger. And yes they did! I was issued my epi at 11:00 and was 5 cm.

After only one hour I went from 5 to 8 cm. Dh and I were both so excited! Another hour and I was up to a 9. I was stuck at a 9 for about an hour and a half and they had me start the pitocin, at the lowest level. At 4 PM she upped the dose a tad and I finally made it over the hump.

At 5 PM the nurse wanted me to start doing "practice pushes" only my practice pushes were full on and the baby kept dropping faster and faster. After a half an hour he was right there!, although my doctor was out joking with the nurses still and not dressed. We all thought this was funny as my doctor is a cut up like that. I had to hold back two contractions and when he finally came in I pushed for 30 seconds and out he came! I had a 2 degree upper tear and very swollen but I am healing great.

I had no complications and actually I found my labor very easy! He was born at 6:06 PM October 15th, 7 pounds 7 ounces, 18 inches long.

I ended up contracting a UTI the very last day and had a temp of 102 so we had to stay at the hospital another night. We were finally able to come home Friday afternoon. My mom ended up staying the entire weekend and helping out. The first night and day were the hardest only because we had to get into a routine and find what works best.

Breastfeeding is going great! I was having the hardest time as hye showed me how to breastfeed in the hospital using pillows: what a joke! It was more awkward that anyhting else. Yes, it does hurt and I ended up almost quitting the second night because I was such pain but I found that my nipple shield is my "breast" friend! I do suppliment formula at night. he sleeps great and is not fussy, only when he needs something. Knock on wood: this is easier than I thought!

I feel great now and it is the best I have felt in a long time!
