Bleeding nipple care

I have a cut on my nipple that's bleeding, sort of... it's kind of like a cut when you wear flip flops for the first time and they rub your foot the wrong way.... know what I mean? I noticed last night the skin peeled back, and today it's bleeding, or better to say the part where the skin peeled off is red (not dripping blood or anything). It doesn't hurt while nursing, the only time it hurt a little was in the shower.

What's the best way to care for this? I'm using Lanolin, letting it air out, putting BM on it after nursing, and offering the other breast first (all of which I read on kellymom). Is there anything else I should be doing?

Re: Bleeding nipple care

  • you can make a cup of warm water mixed with a teaspoon of salt and a teaspoon of baking soda and soak your nip in it before and after nursing but it sounds like you are doing a good job caring for it so keep that up and it will hopefully heal soon!

  • Those are all good things to do. MY LC also said that when things get really bad, I can put neosporin on them - if I wipe it off before the next feeding. In the beginning, I alternated between Lansinoh and Earth Mama Angel Baby nipple cream, which helped.

If it gets really bad, you can wear shells to keep your clothing from touching your nips. HTH!
