3rd Trimester

Dr going on vacation --- vent

I saw my dr a few days ago and he informed me that he would be away until possibly end of next week.  This would be totally fine if my due date wasn't next Saturday.  I am stressing out a bit since he is the only dr in the practice (one man show office).  He delivered my son almost 4 yrs ago and I would love for him to be there to deliver my 2nd child. He's great and I am very comfortable with him.   He mentioned a few other dr's which would be available should I go into labor while he is away but I am not thrilled about this.  I haven't even met these dr's before. Ugh!

The "good" news is when I saw him I was 1cm and 50%.  I know I can't control when baby arrives but I am hoping we can hold out until my actual due date or within a day or 2 of the EDD.  Of course I want to meet my baby but I also want to have my dr deliver instead of stranger.

Sorry for the long post, just needed to vent. Confused

  • I know it can be stressful but I wouldn't worry too much. Chances of delivering on or before EDD are typically pretty slim.

I know I cut it real close with DS1. I was with a practice of 5 doctors. You got whoever was on call when you went into labor. There was 1 I didn't like, 1 that was my absolute favorite. I went into labor when the 1 I didn't like was on call. It was down to the wire, by the last hour to delivery my favorite came on shift and was the one to come to the hospital. Phew! Made it by the skin of our teeth. Hopefully the same happens for you.

  • I know it may seem stressful, but as the daughter of an ob/gyn, your Dr. deserves a vacation sometimes too! And the fact of the matter is that no matter when he takes his vacation, he's bound to upset one of his patients just like he did you because someone is always going to due around the time of his vacation. Just remember that no matter what, a qualified professional will be there to deliver your baby safe and sound Smile
  • That's a bummer.... I'm on baby #4 and my doctor has only delivered baby #2.  The other 2 where when he was not on rounds at the hospital. My practice have 5/6 doctors I know all of them b/c the practice gives us a chance to meet all of them at least once before our due date. We'll see what happens with #4, it is what is.

  • It certainly is unfortunate if you have to be delivered by a stranger, but your doctor deserves a vacation too. If they planned their time off around due dates, they'd never get a vacation.

    exactly.

  • This is the reason I spent more time chosing the hospital than the Dr. Once I was ready to choose a doctor I became familiar with who is in their on-call group.

Don't stress about it. The doctor doesn't do much more than catch! Trust your instincts, kow your plan, and I hope you love your hospital.

  • It's really hard, but try not to stress over it. You have no control over the situation. Of course you want your doc, but in the end, your baby will be here and that will be the most important thing. My OB went on vacation around my due date and I had a c/s with a different doc. I wasn't crazy about the idea, but it worked out very well in the end. And you will have lots of "strangers" coming in to check on everything at the hospital, it's just part of the experience. GL! :)

  • My doctor is going to be out on vacation the week before I am due. He told me that I couldn't go into labor while he was out! I told him I'd sure try to work around his schedule, he just chuckled!
