Apparently Breast Pumps are Covered? HSA?

I was just looking at the IRS publication 502 (after speaking with my HSA insurance company, CIGNA) to see if immunotherapy was covered. While I was looking, I noticed that breast pumps and lactation supplies are covered. I am excited, but is this too good to be true? My pump has been slowly getting worse and worse. I am thinking of going and picking up a Medela Freestyle pump today. But, honestly, this seems way too good to be true! Am I a schmuck? ;-)

  • Yes, pumps and supplies can be covered through HSA and FSA accounts, or are tax deductible as a medical expense.

  • I don't know how much policies vary within a company but I have Cigna and was told the pump was only covered if the mom and baby were separated for a medical reason.

That's through your health insurance....my insurance (BCBS) said the same thing, but it's covered under my company's FSA account.  So yes, go get your pump lol!  Here's a tip - if you can go somehwere that accepts the FSA card - walgreens, target, CVS - and get your pump, then you don't have to wait to be reimbursed but you can just put it on the card there.  BRU doesn't have an FSA card reader so you have to pay for it, then be reimbursed.  You may have to go to the pharmacy to swipe it, but it's no big deal.
