Washing baby clothes and diff detergents

Hello, just trying to get an idea of who is planning on pre-washing all of the baby clothes prior to baby being born. It seems as if mostly everyone in my family skipped this but I am hearing that lots of other people are washing them first. Also, is it really necessary to use Dreft? It seems so expensive and I'm wondering why a free and clear detergent wouldnt be just as safe and gentle to use.

  • The tags pretty much all say wash before using on every baby item I bought, so I did.  As for Dreft, it's got perfumes in it so I just went with All Free & Clear.

  • I always washed all of the clothes before putting them on the baby.  Also, I never bought special detergent, just the same free and clear that I use on the whole family's laundry.

  • I washed all the clothes I have so far amd I did end up washing them in dreft but in the future I am thinking of just doing the free and clear, it's alot less expensive.  I also have a 115oz bottle of babies r us detergent on the registry lol ..

  • Because we are Team Green, I have only washed the neutral clothing that we have in in up to 9mth sizes. I got a lot of boy's clothes from my sister-in-law and girl's clothes from a friend, but I won't wash those until we're home from the hospital. I washed my stuff because I always wash my clothes when I first get them- figured I'd do the same for the baby.

You are right about Dreft being really expensive. It also has dyes & perfumes added. I'm using Tide All & Clear detergent and Downy Free & Clear softener for the baby's stuff- blankets, seat covers, clothes, etc.
  • I washed everything before I put it away. Even blankets that were in packages. I used All free & clear, the price of Dreft is outragious!

  • Yes, you should wash everything the baby will touch/wear first. I would only wash a few items from newborn size and up--your baby may not fit into newbron long, you never know. Dreft has perfume, so just use anything free and clear.. All Free and Clear is good and less expensive. In my experience, drying the clothes in the dryer will shrink them and cut down on your wear-time, so I used a drying rack for all the baby clothes. I was not working, so I could do this.

  • Dreft is expensive and smells weird. DH has sensitive skin already so I've been using Tide Free for a while now, I'm planning on using the same for LO.

  • I washed everything, including my cloth diapers in the Rockin' Green detergent I got for the cloth diapers. I have some Tide Free and Clear I purchased too and moved my husbands and I's laundry to that.

  • I'm washing everything.  I saw that someone else from a different post awhile back was even washing their car seat and swing cover.  I hadn't thought of that but it makes sense so I did the same thing.  The cheapest detergent I could find was the Purex one that doesn't have any dyes or perfumes.  I think it's called Purex hypoallergenic or something.  I got the Downy liquid and bounce sheets that are in the white packages too.  I'm still washing my and DH's clothes in regular detergent to save a little money.
