Breastfeeding

When you go out...

...when do you pump?  I haven't left DD yet, but DH has been giving her a bottle of pumped milk daily.  Normally, I just pump while he's giving her a bottle and that's our bottle for the following day.  We're traveling cross country to attend a wedding in a couple of weeks and just wondering how to navigate pumping while at a wedding and reception for 6 hours.  My boobs get uncomfortable after 3-4 hours, I can't imagine going 6 hours without feeding or pumping.  Any advice on when to feed/pump to decrease discomfort and not horribly affect my supply?  Thanks so much!!!

Re: When you go out...

  • Does your pump work on batteries? If so, I suggest finding a bathroom or office somewhere to pump at the reception. When we go on trips, I pump in the car. Park away from the action and cover up just like you would if breastfeeding. If you don't have a battery pack for your pump, you might invest in a manual pump to use for instances like this. Medela makes a pretty good one.

  • Ditto pp.  I was the matron of honor in a wedding at just over 3wks pp and I just snuck away when necessary to pump.  It was a little bit of a pain but it worked out just fine.

I always pumped as often as she ate.

So if she was going to eat 2x while I was out of the house, I'd pump 2 times.

Early on, my limit for doing 'nothing' was close to 3 hours.  Now it's 6 :)

This makes me SO happy--6 hours would be awesome.

Great advice everyone!  Looks like I'll be pumping in the car at the reception.
