BFing running mamas, come in.

Just wondering if you noticed a drop in your supply when you resumed running? I just started this week and am only doing three miles right now, but I will increase my distance. I'm worried I'll tank my supply. How long do you run? So far I'm eating oatmeal and drinking a ton of water. Any other tips? Thanks!

Re: BFing running mamas, come in.

  • I only notice a minimal drop in my supply if I slack on drinking water.  I try to drink around 150oz on the days I am running and 100oz on days I  am not.  I also hydrate while running.

I am running 3x/week between 5-12 miles each time.

I am also pumping ~3x/day (to build a stash and help keep supply up), and always do right before going out for a run.

Ok thanks! This is good info. I'm going back to work in a few weeks so I'm pumping too. Right now it's hardest just to find time to run. I've been going after DD goes to sleep around 8:30. I always come home from a meager three mile run to a screaming DS and a frustrated DH. Makes it hard to relax while I'm out, though it's my only source of "me time" currently. I know it will get better with time...
  • Oh, gosh please tell me that doesn't happen to everyone. I'm already struggling with a low supply and I'm forced to supplement. I've been using the fenugreek tea but it's only upped my supply by an ounce.I guess, I'll just have to throw in the towell for bfing when I return to my 8mile runs. The only thing holding me back from returning to my runs is the midwife's ok. :(

It's hard enough to find time to run with one, I cannot imagine how hard it is with two.  Totally agree with you about the "me time" though.  When I go running or to the gym is practically the only time I am away from DD.

  • I run a lot and have not noticed a change in my supply.

This link on Kellymom says exercise does not affect milk supply.

Maybe the dehydration could, but I don't think the running itself would.

  • Good to know. Thanks. I drink sooo much water, it's as if I'm still prego! LOL. I'll be sure to keep my fluid intake up when I return to running. I don't want my supply to decrease in the slightest bit. I wish I did't have to supplement at all. Any other tips and advice for running mamas? I love this topic and could really use the insight. This baby and bfing is a challenge but I want to experience as much as I can. The first one was super tough, being a premie, that I didn't try hard enough to bf. I gave up after a month. I don't want to repeat my failure.
