December 2010 Moms

Here is a would you rather....

Let's say you were engaged and you were given $20,000 with the choice of either:

A. spending the money on a wedding

B. using the money as you see fit

What would you do?

Re: Here is a would you rather....

  • I would go for option B.  I had a very nice wedding but looking back on it, I would have rather taken some of the money and used towards "real life" stuff.  I think the whole wedding industry in general is totally out of hand.  I enjoyed my wedding but was no where near a bridezilla and looking back on it, I feel like most of the day was more for our parents than it was for us.

  • B  But it would very hard not to spend it all on the wedding.

Option B.  But I'd use some of it to supplement wedding spending on a few key areas (like food - gosh I loved my wedding caterer).

  • EASY...B   I'm not engaged in any way, shape, or form, but we've recently asked my Dad if he'd be willing to help us out in buying a house in lieu of a wedding.  I know everyone's circumstance is different, but at this point, it's an easy decision.

  • B.  We only spent around $5000 on our wedding and it was pretty cool. I'd rather put what's left toward a house.

  • obviously B...because it still leaves open the option of spending some of it on the wedding. I think you need to ask again with something like -- $20K on the wedding or $10K to spend as you see fit?

My wedding cost at least $20K so with that (10K vs 20K) choice I probably would have said spend it on the wedding. But looking back of course, even though I loved our wedding, I think, "what's the point?"

  • I would have used it for the down payment on our house!  We spent $6000 on a wedding and I thought that was ridiculous.

  • B cause i only had a tiny ceremony at home.  i didnt want a big wedding and wanted to save all my money to buy things that i really wanted.  if i had to go back, id do it all the same way again.
  • I would definitely choose B, and if I could do my wedding all over again I would NOT have spent $12,000 like I did!! It kinda makes me sick...

This. I actually did have that very choice -- my parents offered to either give us the money they'd saved for the wedding, or spend it on the wedding. We chose the latter, but if I could go back and do it again, I'd have a simple ceremony (maybe a destination wedding sort of thing) and keep the rest of the $$$.
