Question for working moms/pumping moms

I've been back to work four weeks now. I am pumping three times a day all at work (9, 12, 3) and BF DD the rest of the time.

I'm getting about 18 oz / day from my three pumping sessions and DD eats about 8-9 oz / day while I'm gone. I've been freezing the extra and happy to have built a good freezer stash quickly. My question is, am I creating an oversupply problem or should I just be happy to have the extra milk to freeze? Since DD is so little I don't want to drop a pump session, just thinking of stopping pumping once I hit what she needs (3 oz) per pump session....thoughts?

Re: Question for working moms/pumping moms

  • I did the same schedule with DS.  I would stick with the three sessions, especially because DD will probably increase the amount she needs during the day as she gets older.  When I first went back to work I pumped enough during three sessions but by the time DS was almost 6 months I was barely pumping enough to get him through the day and would have to add an extra pump session after he went to sleep.

  • Do Not Stop!!!  She will be taking more milk during growth spurts, more milk as she grows, you may experience the periodic decline due to stress, missed pump sessions due to meetings or whatever, a cold or illness, the eventual return of AF, etc....  Keep building your freezer supply NOW as you may see it dwindle away quickly!!  I thought we had plenty in our freezer to stay ahead of her but once DD hit those growth spurts and everything I listed above, I found myself having to add pumping sessions, power pumping, and occasionally bringing her to work with me (so thankful that was an option for us) because there wasn't enough milk in our supply to leave her home.  Keeping ahead of her has been a constant struggle - I wish that I had been more diligent earlier!

  • I thought for bm babies quantity of milk doesn't really change but make up of it does over time...?

  • Dont stop!  Keep banking that extra milk in the freezer.  You will need it to get you through growth spurts and supply drops.  Trust me!  I had the same supply in the beginning and have used my freezer stash a handful of times and was so glad I had it.  My supply has regulated now and I barely pump what DS needs for the day.  I wouldnt mess with success.
