What are your thoughts about movie ratings & a 5 year old?

MH & I are butting heads this summer with the release of all of these super hero movies (Captain America, Green Lantern, Thor )
My son is FIVE & I feel that these movies are rated PG13 for a reason.
The violence that is achieved in cinema is so real these days.
He (the husband) will not let it rest

Am I being a stick in the mud?
Are you taking your five year olds to these movies?

He has seen the Star Wars series, & a few other action movies.

Re: What are your thoughts about movie ratings & a 5 year old?

  • My 6-year-old wants to see the superhero movies too. I think they are too mature for him. It's not just the violence -- I don't think he would be able to follow the plot.  FWIW, we watched RANGO last week, which is rated PG, and I was kind of surprised at the raunchy language.

Did your son understand the plot of Star Wars? DS has some of the Star Wars books, and frankly I find them confusing. (not a SW fan.)

  • I would absolutely not let them watch a PG13 at age 5.  I doubt they would even follow the story in most of those movies.  Even some PG are questionable for me.

  • No chance he's seeing a PG 13 movie.  His mouth is bad enough as it is.

  • I don't even pay attention to movie ratings.  Not that that's a good thing but this would be my scenario....we would enter the movie, start watching and THEN I would think "Oh, this might be a touch inappropriate for my 5 year old!"  LOL

That said, if this was a discussion in my house and Joe voiced a concern about them seeing it, I wouldn't fight him on that.  It's a MOVIE! It's not anywhere near a necessity and if you aren't comfortable with it, that should be the end of the story.  There is just no need to rush things like this, ya know.  Your husband needs to move on from this.  For sure.

We took DD to see Rango in the theatre and I was shocked at some of the language and the violence.  Will be checking the parent ratings sites from now on!

  • I have seen both Captain America and Thor, both are not appropriate for a 5 year old.  There is a lot of violence in both movies.  I would think they would scare a 5 year old.
  • When DS was 5, we would watch the movie first and then decide.  That was the year the first Transformers movie came out and after watching it, we decided to let him see it.  He also watched Spiderman, Superman and other movies like that when he was 5, 6 and 7 years old.

At 7 years old, I didn't want him to see the The Dark Knight.  That movie disturbed me, we didn't let him watch it.

Now he's 9 and DH takes him to see Thor and Captain America, its no big deal.

  • We wait until all the superhero movies come out on DVD and then watch them at home. That way if it gets too violent, scary, inappropriate, etc. we can just turn it off. Usually DS will let us know if it's too much for him.

  • No chance would I let my kids watch a PG13 movie at age 5.  I try to stick to G, but sometimes there are cute movies that get PG because of a few random things that she doesn't get anyway.  I wouldn't even consider a movie that was PG13, but that's just me...and I am 99% sure my husband would agree!

  • Thanks ladies, I was starting to think I was being over protective. I will stand my ground.
DS is a VERY mature five, but just because he can understand the movie does not mean it is meant for him.

Someone asked if he understood Star Wars, yes he understands it better than I do.

We had a similar conversation about these movies that came out this summer too. DH thought DS would love them, until I reminded him that they were completely inappropriate for a 5 year old. He agreed, and we will wait to see movies like that until he is older.

  • No way.  I have a hard time letting my 5 yr olds watch some PG movies.  Not only the violence, but the sexual content is would be too much for a PG 13 movie IMO.  I haven't seen too many super hero movies, but the 1st Transformer movie has Megan Fox bent over a car in her shortie shorts.  Neither DD or DS needs subjected to that at this age.  I use this website https://www.kids-in-mind.com/ in deciding if the movie is ok for my kids or not.

This.  My girls watched their first ever PG movie this week (Beethoven) and I was a bit nervous about even that, but we have my 10-year-old niece staying with us this week and were looking for a movie all three girls would like.  I definitely won't be taking them to a PG13 movie for a LONG time.
