February 2012 Moms

I forgot to add this to my update..

My OB really scared me. I had O- blood type and DH has O+ . They said if I start bleeding at ANY time I had to go to the emergency room ASAP to get a shot to prevent my body from "rejecting" or fighting the baby. This really scared me. Either way I get the shot at 28 weeks to prevent this but any 2nd time mommies experience this? Its making me pretty nervous. They said this might be why I lost one of my 2 embryos because of my body rejecting what blood type it might have been.

EDIT :: forgive the migraine -- I got the blood types backwards. fixed now

Re: I forgot to add this to my update..

  • I thought if you are RH + you don't need the shots.  If you were RH - and he was RH + then you would have to get regular shots.  My mom and a friend in college had to have these.  But maybe that is why you would only need this in an emergency situation.

  • Shucks!  About both the RH and the migraneSad  So this isn't a series of shots?  Hopefully someone will have some great advice for you.  Sorry Doll (((HUGE HUGS)))

  • This seems to have some great information.  I was sort of off on the series of shots, but you would have to have it again after delivery.  The series is only 2...oops Embarrassed

  • I'm Rh- and have been through the shots before.  It's really nothing to worry about but you do need to get the shot if you start bleeding for any reason (not normal pg related spotting but actual bleeding).

I had the shot after each of my m/c's, when I started bleeding at 10 weeks with DS, again for the routine 28 week shot and I think after he was born too.  I haven't had one yet with this one but it'll be coming.

This is from the RhoGAM website but it helps to clarify some things.

  • I had bleeding at 7 weeks and went in for an appointment at 7w4d and they took my blood and found out I was RH negative. I had to go back at 7w6d (ASAP) and receive the Rhogam injection because of this. I will need another around 28-30 weeks, and then one at delivery if my baby is RH positive. It is a precautionary measure as you said to prevent your body from rejecting the baby. It is more of a concern for subsequent pregnancies rather then the first, but your OB knows now about you being RH neg and will be on top of the injections. As a PP said, anytime you bleed though you will need the injection. It's really not bad at all.

  • I have to get rhogam shots as well. You actually have 72 hours to get one if you had bleeding. I've had several with the losses and some bleeding while I was pregnant with DD. The theory is getting the shots each.time prevents you from building antibodies that would fight any subsequent pregnancies. The chances even without the shots are low but since it can help avoid complications anyone RH- should get them. I also had them at 28 weeks and then after birth.
