I know it's expected that newborns lose weight, but I changed me pedi appt to this morning after hearing the belly sounds and since she wound with only one wet diaper in the 24 hour period. LO lost 11 oz and I had DH give her just over 1oz of formula beforehand so the dr said it's about 12oz, which was more than 10% of her birth weight. We are now on a strict plan of feedings to maintain her weight for our visit on Thursday. Every 2 hours I attempt to feed (she won't latch while asleep despite many attempts to wake her), then I hand her to DH to give her up to 2 oz. of formula while I pump to add to the next feeding. On Thursday, we will set up a new plan for next week to help her gain weight. By then my milk should be in...
I was so upset this morning, but trusted my gut that LO was hungry. Her wet and soiled diapers have increased so I am relieved. I also am thankful she is feeding from me while awake.
Thanks to those who gave me advice or encouragement on last night's post.
Re: LO lost 11 oz. (Update to 3 day old's belly sounds)
My LO went from 8lbs 2oz at birth, to 7 lbs 9 oz leaving the hospital to 6lbs 13 oz at his first pedi appointment at 8 days pp. I was terrified that he wouldn't be okay. We added in two bottles of formula each day and kept up with breastfeeding and pumping. He is now back on track and up to 10lbs 6 oz (15th percentile). I am still worried about his weight but the pedi thinks that he is on track since he is so long. It is a scary time but I am sure your LO will pick back up quickly. Good Luck.
Keep it up! The nursing WILL get easier, just don't give up. You are doing great, I hope that your LO will start to gain weight and be back to birth weight soon. She will be outgrowing her NB size clothes before you know it. GL!!
Thanks ladies. I appreciate the encouragement and success stories. It helps to know other moms get just as afraid as I am. I won't give up. At the very least, I'd like to pump the bm and then bottle feed it to her.
On another note, I noticed a tiny bit of blood in her spit up from the formula. The pedi asked about the condition of my nipples and mentioned that blood is undigestable so we'd see it come up. He said a tiny spot of blood isn't a problem, but after pumpingm they are bleeding a little more than a spot. Recs?
