I have an infection and it was recommended I take metronidazole (flagyl) by my OB practice... I was originally prescribed the gel but after reading the package insert and the scary warnings, I got a second opinion from my old OB gyn... who recommended the oral medication. I just took my first dose and am super worried about hurting the baby. Does anyone have any experience with this medication during pregnancy? TIA!
ETA: the oral version of the same medication, metronidazole.
Re: has anyone taken metronidazole while pregnant?
I had to take it in my 1st Trimester (7 wks) for a really bad infection. The ER doctor called my OB and they said the "scary stuff" that's been found with it is questionable and not consistent. And then in the 2nd Trimester (18 wks) I had to take it again because they thought I'd gotten the infection again. I hadn't, once the lab results came back. At the A/S, nothing looked out of the ordinary. Everything measured fine, everything looked fine, etc.
ETA: My first time it was a one-time 2200mg dose of the oral. The second time was a 200 or 500mg dose (I can't remember) every morning and evening for a week of the oral. I'm sure if your OB prescribed either form, they haven't had any problems with it. The warnings are supposedly only for first trimester, and the risks associated with infection outweigh the suppsed risks associated with the medication if they've prescribed it.
