3rd Trimester

Stripping of the membranes

This morning my doctor stripped my membranes. Now I am feeling very crampy, had a little bit of blood when I went to the bathroom and very loose stools. Could this be the beginning of labor?? I hope so :)

What were any of our experiences like with membrane stripping?

Re: Stripping of the membranes

  • I've never had mine done but I did read this "Having your membranes stripped will not put you into labor right away. It may not put you into labor at all. If you do have your membranes stripped, expect to be uncomfortable and slightly crampy during the procedure. You might feel mild cramps or contractions for up to 24 hours after your membranes have been stripped. You may also have slight spotting (a small amount of bleeding) for up to 3 days after your membranes are stripped. This bleeding can be reddish, pink, or brown and may be mixed with mucus."

  • Mine were stripped at my 39 week appt.  I had the same symptoms you're describing (cramps, blood, etc.) and DD was still born a day after my EDD.  Everyone is different though, so maybe this is the start of something for you.  You just never know.

  • I had my membranes stripped on 3 different occassions and had the same symptoms as you are but never went into labour naturally. I ended up being induced. I wish you much better luck than I had though.
  • I had my membranes stripped 5 times with DS1.  It did nothing for me, he eventually came when he was ready.  Hopefully it works out better for you.

  • I had this done with my first and went into labor around five hours later.  I think that having it done can bring on labor if your body and the baby are ready to go but if that is not the case it can just cause some cramping and discomfort.  For me I had cramping after the procedure (within an hour or so) but the cramps were nothing like the contractions that I experienced around five hours afterwards.  I would wait it out and see if the cramping gets more defined and stronger which would indicate contractions.

     Best of luck.

  • I had it done twice when I was pregnant with my son. The first time was a few days before my due date and all it did was give me cramping that went away a few hours later. The second time was 5 days after my due date (a Thursday).,.. I went into labour late the next night and he was born late afternoon on Saturday so about 48hrs later. I'm not sure if the fact that I was 7 days overdue or the membrane strip started labour but you never know :) Good luck!

  • i had it done at 38.4 weeks, I experienced the same symptoms as you but lost my mucous plug that night in one huge clump. im doing it again tomorrow at my 39.4 week appointment. Doc said its 50/50 shot of working if your body is ready... the worst that can happen is our bodies will not go into labour.

im hoping it works tomorrow!! definitely worth a shot. also i wanted to add that it was not painful for me whatsoever.
