XP: Anyone's LO drop 2nd nap at 12 mos or earlier?

I've read most LO's drop their 2nd nap around 14-18 mos.  For the past week or so, DD has been taking 45 min or longer to go down for her morning nap.  Once she's down, she sleeps for an hour to an hour & 15min.  And her afternoon nap is still anywhere from an hour to hour and a half.  DS still falls asleep pretty quick for both naps (despite her carrying on & playing).  I don't know if this is just a phase for her or if she's getting ready to drop the morning nap?  It just seems a little early to me.  She has a habit of pooping when she first goes down for her morning nap, too, and sometimes that keeps her up (we always go in to check her if she's not down w/in 30 min).  But, that's not always the cause.

Any advice appreciated!

  • Mine dropped their morning naps very early on about 7-8 months.  They just did the afternoon naps from about 12-12:30 & slept for about 2-3.5 hours (this is what they do now too @ 18 months).  I think I stopped laying them down for their morning nap when they started showing no interest in it & weren't acting tired.  Trust me they will let me know if they are tired, Addi will go lay on the couch.  There was a few times in the beginning where they'd fall asleep on me for about a 1/2 hour in the AM, but that died out shortly.

Basically like I said I just went off of their cues on when they decided they were done w/ the morning naps which basically was the fighting to go down & then not sleeping when I put them down & just playing in their cribs.

GL & hope it all works out for you.

  • Mine were pretty much forced to drop 1 nap because the 1 yr old room at daycare only does 1.  WE found that at home on days off and weekends, if they seemed tired, we would still put them down for an AM and PM nap.  After almost 2 months, we are finally used to one afternoon nap and they go for 2.5 hours.  I would say just follow their cues.

  • One of my girls has been having trouble with her afternoon nap, and actually seems to do okay without it (even though that sometimes means she's up for seven hours before bedtime). The other one, however, still takes two naps like a champ. This makes me nervous, because I really want to keep them on the same nap schedule. Or at least close to it. If we have one taking two naps and one taking one nap in the middle, we're stuck at home from 9 am to 3 pm every day! And I don't even want to think about what that would do to our feeding schedule.
