Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Gotta share my MIL vent

So I get a call yesterday to see what size DD is currently wearing. I reply 18 months.

MIL: "No that cant be right thats the size I bought her last summer"

Me: "Yes she didnt wear it last year shes 18 months now and wearing 18 months"

MIL: "Oh okay" "Well I was going to buy her some stuff does she need anything for summer?"

Me: "No we have plently but thank you very much"

MIL" "Okay how about fall clothes, what size then"

Me: "You would be safe with 2T or 24 months"

MIL" "okay"

So she comes over with a bunch of summer things!!! All in 2T which are too big for her now. Plus we have too many summer things. I know I should be thankful and all but why the hell call me and ask me these things? She did buy ONE long sleeve shirt. DH told me to take them back (mind you we have no gift reciept but they are from Target). Now just one more thing for me to do.

Okay vent over

Re: Gotta share my MIL vent

  • I'd keep them. Tegan is little, like your daughter, and I fully expect her to still be in 2T sizes next summer. Most 2T clothing is made for children who are over 33 inches (33 inches would be the minimum height) and 26+ lbs.

I thought about that but I dont know if I am really wanting to stock up on stuff for next year on the off chance she doesnt fit. Shes 32 inches now and 21 lbs. I guess I was really hoping for some cute fall stuff since we dont really have that much

  • If she's petite, you may at least be able to use them next spring or the beginning of the summer. Target's return policy is horrible without a receipt, so you may be better off just keeping them. DD1 is in 12-18 m now and in the lower weight/height range for the size. She's 23lbs10oz and 30.5". She got a couple outfits in 24m and 2T that I'm hoping will fit next spring/early summer.

I can totally understand your vent- my in laws do the same thing.  However they live across the state so we dont have the same stores.  I appreciate the fact that they want to save money so they buy off season but my kids are petite so they NEVER fit them and half the time I cant take them back since I dont have that store or they don't give me a receipt and our stores wont take them back without them.  Not to mention, like I have all the time in the world to be returning things for the clearance price- its not worth the gas.  However, I will say this- I don't know if your LO is PT or not but when my kids PT (they were 15 & 17 months old) they actually went back a size in cloths due to no diaper so they actually could wear their same pants (not shirts) the next year- it worked out really great for saving money!
  • Thanks ladies. I think I will bring the stuff to Target when I am in the area and just see what they will give me. We do plan to be out of diapers by next summer (keeping my fingers crossed). The one outfit though is white capris, I dont think I can handle that with a toddler. LOL. So guess it will be a gamble!

  • Our DD has had a lot of weight issues and is extremely small - she is 15 months old right now and still wearing 6-9 months. People buy us clothes for her all the time in the wrong size for the wrong season. I get around it with layering. So in the fall, she would wear a plain white long-sleeve onesie and the t-shirt over it or a skirt or shorts over leggings.

  • How long has she been in 18 months? If she still has a couple months left in them than she will likely fit in 2T next summer. You could exchange the 24m stuff for and get colder weather things and keep the 2T for next summer. Luckily, Target has eased up on their return policy so it shouldn't be a big deal.

  • Totally get your vent, that is why the Bump is good sometimes to vent!

  • I would hang on to them.  My DD's bday is at the end of May.  She didn't start wearing her 2T stuff until halfway through that summer.  She turned 3 3 months ago and is still in ALL 2T shorts and most shirts.  All the 3T stuff is still huge.

I knew she'd be in 2T stuff again, because last summer I had the adjustable waists pulled all the way to practically the last notch.  She would have had to gain about 6 inches in the waist and sprout about 4 inches for them not to fit.

She has always been completely average in height and weight.

Yeah, it might not be worth the aggravation. I'd be inclined to keep them or give them as a gift to someone who's LO they will fit. I get where you're coming from though. Not to sound ungrateful, but it's so frustrating when people ask DS's size (or don't) then get him stuff that doesn't fit. He has 24 month and 2T stuff that's been hanging in his closet since he was 10 months old. We have such limited storage space that while I'm grateful people want to augment his wardrobe, I don't have room for stuff he can't wear yet.
