Trouble TTC

Progesterone ?

The medication protocol after my septum surgery is 3 weeks of estrogen and 1 week of progesterone. I'm supposed to then have a second follow up with my doctor and at that time will schedule my HSG (if the healing looks good).

Surgery was July 26th. I'm scheduled to start the progesterone on 8/16 and take it for 1 week. Should I expect my period to start during the 7 days that I'm taking progesterone or right after I finish it? I forgot to ask the doctor this. I have to schedule my next follow up appt and the HSG (atleast make the appt - I can always push it back). I just don't want to miss the time to get the HSG.

thanks!!

Re: Progesterone ?

  • i had a septum surgery and i did the 3 weeks of estrogen but then I did provera to induce my period. is that what you are taking? It took me almost 2 weeks to get my period. Some people it takes a day and it can take up to 2 weeks after you finish the meds. it really depends on the person. How do you think your septum resection went? did you have a complete septum. I had to have 2 surgeries for mine because i had a little bit left. I hope yours is all gone!!

  • Hi! I think the surgery went well. I feel really good for being 6 days out. No pain and the bleeding has pretty much stopped. My rx is for Aygestin?

Yes - I had a complete septum. Atleast I think so based on the fact that it went into my cervix. The dr got 95% of it - he said he went until it started bleeding. He feels confident that I won't need a second surgery.

I also had a 9cm cyst removed from my left ovary at the same time. It was a lapro surgery.

My only concern now is my tubes. The dr found scarring on both tubes and on the back of my uterus. He thinks it's from the 2 infections I had after my appendicitis 6 yrs ago. So I have to get a repeat HSG (one during surgery appeared to show both blocked). I'm praying the new one shows atleast 1 tube open. I really don't want to go straight to IVF

    When was your surgery?

  • i had 2 the first was june 2 and the second was july 7. I only had less than 2%left but my re wanted to make sure it was all out but i probably would have been fine keeping the rest in. she is the "go to" septum doctor at yale and said mine was one of the hardest cases and ran out of "time" to get the last part out because i was absorbing so much saline. I had a complete to and it extended into my vagina. she removed that portion and the part in the uterus but kept the part in the cervix. have you been to the yahoo mullerian anomilies group? It is a great place. https://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/MullerianAnomalies/messages

the second surgery she removed a couple of polyps. that sucks about the scarring :( i hope your follow up is great. do you schedule it once you have your period? did you have a balloon put in? that was the worst thing for me. I hated those darn balloons!

  • Yep - I had a balloon. It didn't bother me until the last day. The estrogen pills make me nauseas.

that's great that all of yours is gone!! He had to stop bc of the bleeding. He said it's wasn't safe to continue. That also why he didn't try to open my tubes right then. I had already been under much longer than they originally planned. I'm happy it's done and that they found it & fixed it right away.

I have my second follow up once my period is over. He'll do an internal u/s then to check on my ovary. As long as everything looks good - I'll get the HSG. I'm probably going to go ahead and schedule the HSG based on when I think my period would be over. I don't want to have to wait until October. I know its weird - but this all has been a little disappointing so I'm hoping to keep things moving a long quickly so I know what our plan is.

  • I read that it's done after your period but before you ovulate. I don't know what the turn around time is on getting it scheduled and who knows what my cycle will be like post-surgery. Since my follow up appt isn't until the end of August if I miss the window - I think I'll have to wait until next cycle. This test will determine if we go right to IVF or not.

  • oh ok. the day I got my period (day 10 of provera) I called to schedule my shg (she did that instead of a hsg) for the 6th day of my cycle. it occured after my follow up on july 1. if my shg showed no more septum I could have ttc right away but it didnt so I had to wait until now. hopefully it will be as quick for you. originally they told me if i had to do 2 surgeries it could be 6 months but it ended up being less then 2 months :)

  • Oh nice.  I called & left a message with the scheduling girl at my RE's office.  Hopefully I can atleast get an appt on the books and just move it later on if needed.

I'm praying the dye test comes back clear in atleast 1 tube.  My 2 insurance plans only cover up to $30K lifetime maximum for IF (this will kick in once I'm officially diagnosed as IF - which has not happened yet).  So the max we can get covered for IVF is 2 cycles (based on what I've been told the cost is at my RE's office).
