3rd Trimester

Baby keeping you up at night?

My first baby would kick every night around 7pm and settle down by 8. This baby starts at 7pm and kicks all night long! I can't believe that I have three more months to go. She already feels like a full term baby. My son never woke me up/kept me up at night. With this one, it is a regular occurence. Anyone else having this problem? Any ideas to try to sleep through it? TIA!

Re: Baby keeping you up at night?

  • Last night was this first time that the baby kept me awake with movement- usually I find it soothing, but he was really active and it was causing some pain... I find sometimes switching sides for a while quiets him... hope you get some sleep :-)

  • Oh my goodness that happens to me every night! She will be active during the day, but more so at night... Sometimes if I'm sleeping on my side, she will kick towards the bed and it will jolt me up! My husband got nervous the first couple times it happened because he didn't know why I was springing out of bed haha.. but he has been able to see her moving around in my belly and sees how active she is!  This is my first pregnancy, so it's all new to me.. and I haven't been able to figure out a way to sleep through it yet.. I think it's preparing me for waking up at all hours of the night once she arrives! :-)

  • Yup, pretty much every night. I think don't worry kiddo I'm trained by your brother to not sleep, so if you could cut me some slack for the next 10 weeks I promise I'll be up all night with you if needed.

  • I dread the run at 4am to the restroom because I SWEAR they interpret that as "mom's awake...lets do aerobics" and falling back to sleep is impossible.

I try to tough through it for about 30 minutes if I can't get back to sleep by then I ask DH to rub my belly, they refuse to kick for him 99% of the time and the rubbing motion calms them back to sleep ...I've tried rubbing it myself but I think I focus too hard and I can't fall asleep while I do it.

  • I'm having trouble sleeping too, and like you, never had this problem with DS.  My OB recommending taking either Benadryl or Tylenol PM before bed.  I've been taking a Benadryl every night for about a week and it does seem to help.  I don't know if it makes me sleep through the activity, or if it calms baby down too, but it helps.

  • I wish I had suggestions to help, but I'm in the same boat! I'll lay on my side and the baby will kick so hard against the side I'm laying on that it feels like she's jumping on the bed! I wake up with my body aching in the morning from not getting enough sleep. I just keep telling myself that it's just temporary and that it will all be worthwhile once our little one arrives!
  • When Im falling asleep he kicks for a bit but sometimes he wakes me up early in the morning!!! Thankfully they arent those really strong kicks because I usually just fall back asleep=] Try changing positions when you feel her and maybe shell stop or you wont feel it as much.

  • Abby keeps me up at all hours of the night. When she is not having a dance party she is kicking my bladder! So I understand what you mean. I try to limit my sugary drinks or snacking before bed if I can. Also, I know it sounds weird, but a glass of warm milk right before bed makes me relaxed & seems to negotiate some peace with baby before I drop off. Its still an uphill slog for a good night's rest (which isn't just Abby's fault. Its aches, pains & potty issues), but that's all that's been working for me.

    Good luck!
