Ok now I know what you are taking about. I have heard about ingesting your placenta and the benefits of it but never considered it myself. I didn't realize that there were encapsulation services which would actually make it easier for me to consider it. But I don't kow if I would actually do it.
I did it and didn't get PPD. I have a history of depression so it was important to me to be proactive. I ordered the kit from placenta benefits, my MWs got everything started and DH finished it up. The all said it was pretty easy.
Don't be surprised if you get a lot of responses from grossed out folks on here. It is not generally common practice yet. There are several people who are doing it on the natural birth board if you want to ask over there.

Thank you! I'm terrified about PPD, that's why I'm so interested. I, too, have a history of depression and anxiety. This sounds childish, but I'm really worried about mentioning it my doctor.
I don't think I would ever ingest the placenta, but I have also heard of planting it in a garden or next to a tree. I don't mind the idea of that (if I ever do a home birth, anyway), but my husband might take some convincing.

Don't be surprised if your Dr. either doesn't know anything about it or thinks it's weird. It is just not that common in mainstream medicine...it is more in like with homeopathy and natural remedies.
Personally I would rather prevent PPD natural than have to take meds after the fact..especially when I am BF.

Please, please mention it to your doctor. You may not have any issues at all after the birth, or you may just get the baby blues and not need help, but they do need to know about your past medical history so that they know in advance and can help you. They're not going to judge you.
One of my (only!) RL mom-friends strongly recommended doing this.
I...really do not think it is a thing I would be able to do, personally. And, frankly, I'm not terribly worried about PPD; so far, my pregnancy is shaping up to be just like my mom's, symptom-wise, and she didn't have any issues with PPD whatsoever. So... yeah.

I'm going to do this. I'll be discussing it with my midwife at my 12 week appointment and it will be written in my birth plan. But I'm a little hippy-dippy like that.
Def. not. My thought is the placenta serves its purpose and is delivered after baby is born and once its job is done. I don't feel it was meant to do anything further. Besides the fact it living in my uterus for 9 months and then the thought of ingestion......it sickens me. Sorry if I offended anyone!

Re: Weird question...be open-minded...
I going to say no for myself. I know dogs eat their placentas but that was the only time I heard of anything eating their placentas until now.

Most mammals ingest their placenta- not just dogs.

Cattle also do this; I grew up on a farm and have seen it numerous times. I think that many animals do this actually.
