Medela breast shield size question

Is the sizing of the breast shield based on breast size, nipple size, or both?  I'm pretty sure the medium that came with my Freestyle isn't the correct size but I'm not positive if I need to go up or down in size.  When pumping it seems like to much of my areola is being pulled in so I think I need to go down a size but I have fairly large breasts so it kind of seems odd that I would need a smaller size.  Hope this made sense!  Thanks!!

Nipple size only. Your areola is not supposed to be pulled through, so it sounds like you need to go down a size.

just to double check...

u shud prob get sized by a LC. Size and proper positioning can affect ur experience with a nipple shield. my LC sized me but i wasnt using the best positioning so i had the same prob.

I think she meant breast shields like on a pump, not a nipple shield. Same advice holds for either, but nipple shield sizing is much more important to get right.

I have the same problem and called Medela customer service to check.  She said it's based just on the nipple size and if the areola is being pulled in, it's probably too big.  She also advised to get it checked by a LC just to make sure.
