Babies: 6 - 9 Months

She won't roll

My LO is 7 months and she isn't rolling yet.  She rolls to her side but gets stuck there.  She refuses to roll to her back or her stomach.  Her doctor said he would have hoped she would already be rolling so he wants to see her in a month.  Anyone else's LO not rolling at this age?  I am just wondering if she's lazy or if something else is wrong.  The doctor didn't seem alarmingly concerned but his face didn't show approval.  Thanks!!!

Re: She won't roll

  • DS rolled for the first time (tummy to back) when he was over 6 months old (and has only done it 5 or 6 times).  At both his 4 and 6 month appointments I asked his pedi if we should be concerned that he hadn't, and she said not at all. She said he is strong enough to do it if he wanted to and that some babies simply are not interested. She said sitting up was a more important milestone and that he would roll when he was ready to. It's not at all uncommon for a 7 month old to not have rolled yet, I'm not sure why your pedi is concerned about it. I bet she'll do it before that appointment anyway/ :)

  • Thank you!  Yes, she is sitting just fine.  I don't leave her alone for long periods because when she gets excited she tends to fall straight back so I put pillows around her but she sits alone for the most part.  She also scoots when she's on her stomach.  You're probably right.  Thanks for the feedback!

DS does that too when he gets excited! I always have to put the Boppy about a foot behind him. I think he knows it's there though so he's not afraid to fling himself backward lol.

Finn didn't roll back to tummy until he was almost 8 months old.  He's always hated tummy time and only recently will spend any amount of time that way practicing crawling.  We're not there yet, but he can go backwards now.

He rolled tummy to back very early, but he was just that motivated to get out of tummy time.

ETA:  Ditto pp about the sitting.  He was sitting well and reaching pretty far for toys by 6.5 months.   Our pedi has never been concerned about his lack of motivation to roll, crawl, etc.

I asked my pedi friend and she told me that bc babies spend so much more time on their backs now, rolling isn't considered a milestone anymore. As long as lo is sitting, reaching, pushing up, etc. they don't worry.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • I realize Claire is a little younger, but she also has had zero interest in rolling as well. She's a great sitter and mastered it super fast. I think she just isn't motivated to roll, so she doesn't want to do it.

  • My LO didn't roll until he was almost 7 months old. It just came out of nowhere one day. I think he just didn't have any desire to do it. At 9 months he started crawling and now at 10 months he's walking. I was really concerned too at the time but everything worked out for him. I'm sure it isn't anything to stress out about.
  • DD hasn't rolled yet and my pedi is concerned at all.  DD can sit up for hours at a time so basically she "skipped" rolling.  He said we shouldn't be surprised if she skips crawling and starts walking.
