Pumping and Supply

Hello everyone,

I have been pumping for about 3 weeks now and I can't seem to get more than 2oz total. (1 oz from each boob) I pump twice a day once after the morning feeding and once after the afternoon feeding. I don't want to pump to much and have an over supply of milk as I am with the baby most of the time. I have been pumping to put away for those days when I need to run around and I can leave the LO with the Husband.

What can I do to pump more milk? I read stories about women who pump 9oz each time.

Re: Pumping and Supply

  • It makes sense that you'd only get about an ounce because you're pumping right after feeding LO.  It is not common to get 9 oz in one pumping session and it definitely wouldn't happen right after that mom has nursed her LO.  If you only need milk for rare occasions, I would just keep doing what you're doing and storing your milk.  If you need to build more of a stash, I would consider doing one pumping session a day at the same time, so you're essentially telling your body it needs to make milk for another feeding each day.  Pick a time when you have a good stretch between feedings.  Maybe before you go to bed, or an hour after you feed LO in the morning.  Supply tends to be highest in the morning, but if you pick a consistant time to pump, your supply will adjust to meet that demand.

Thank you for the advice. I know that I won't be getting 9o especially right after a feeding but I have even pumped an hour or so after and still only get the 2o total. I will try what you have suggested and pick a time to add another feeding and pump everyday at that time to see if that helps me get a little more of a stash going.
