Angry with OB....nuva ring(vent) and advice needed

I am so angry right now. Long story short... My Ob insisted the Nuva Ring would be ok to take while EBF...only been on it a month (3weeks) and at DD(she is 11wks) 2 month check up she has only gained a pound (putting her in 10% for weight and off the chart for height and weight) so I read up on the Nuva ring and it is not ideal for breastfeeding can cause supply issues and change cosistancy of breast milk...grr

1. What can I take that won't change my supply

2 How do I increase supply back to normal levels (besides removing the nuva ring, which I did)

3 Do I give her supplemental formula( As I have no stock built up)

 TIA

yeah that is pretty common knowledge, i am so sorry!  put lo to breast every 2hr and pump after the morning nursing.  that will get your supply back up.  drink plenty of water and maybe some oatmeal for breakfast.  as far as i know the mini pill or mirena is the only thing safe for bf'ing but it can effect some peoples supply.  good luck!

there is also paraguard copper iud...this is what i use. it is non hormonal. had it since november and no issues

  • 1. I'm on the mini pill, which hasn't given me any problems with supply.

    2. You nurse. As often as baby will take the breast.

    3. What percentile was she at birth and 1 month? Is she happy or acting hungry? Some babies are small, and that's not actually a problem. A problem is falling lower and lower on the charts as time goes on. I wouldn't jump to formula just because of one appt.

Depo is also safe.  My OB said mini pill, Depo shot, Paraguard or Mirena are the only safe non barrier methods to use while EBFing.

I have always heard adding in a few pumping sessions will increase your supply.

  • 1st, I'd get a new OB.  That is such common knowledge.  They f-ed up.

    1) Mirena, Depo, Paraguard, minipill, and I'm pretty sure noraplant all are okay. You want something that is progesterone only.

    2) Pump after feeding.  Power pump.  Nurse a lot.  You can take Fenugreek and Blessed Thistle to increase your production.

    3) you can supplement, but if she is making enough wet/dirty diapers I probably wouldn't.  Your supply should bounce back pretty fast with the suggestions in #2.
