Went to the ER on Tuesday for cramping and bleeding at 5w5d. Hcg was recorded very low at 169. Ultrasound revealed empty uterus; and subsequently empty hearts for DH and I. This was our first.
Still bleeding today and Dr has recommended a D&C if my hcg levels do not drop (blood test tomorrow).I forgot to ask him if they do this under general anesthesia. The thought really freaks me out. I had a Mirena many years ago, and I remember opening the cervix to be very painful.
Any insight to a D&C post miscarriage?
Re: Getting a D&C
I am very sorry for your loss.
I just had a D&C on Wednesday and I was put under general anesthesia. I woke up from the surgery and didn't have any pain. About an hour later I started cramping but took some tylenol and felt just fine. I had cramps for two days total and today I feel fine physically.
Best of luck to you. I hope everything goes well.
Thank you. Nothing really can prepare you for a loss like this, can it?
Glad to know about the general anesthesia. I'm not sure I could do it if I was awake.

I had a d&c Thursday at the hospital under general anesthesia. I've read some stories on here about girls whose doctor did the procedure in their office with local anesthesia and it did not sound pleasant at all. I came out of anesthesia with some mild cramping and they gave me pain medication at the hospital. I came home and took ibuprofen and have not had any more cramping, and the bleeding stopped within a few hours of surgery. I'd say if you are going to the hospital for your procedure they'll probably put you under.
Sorry for your loss
I'm so sorry for your loss.
I had a D&C 3yrs ago and as PP mentioned, usually you're under general anesthesia...

I had a D/C on Friday as an outpatient surgery. I was very scared before and what I would feel after.
I had general anesthesia, and would recommend it for you. It is bad enough we have to go through this loss, there is no reason you need to be awake for it. After I woke up, I was released from the hospital and went home. I had some very minor cramping and bleeding. I have taken it easy and my bleeding has been minimal. I was prescribed pain medication, but only had to take it once.
Much care and very sorry for your loss. It was our first as well.
