LO hates let down on one side...HELP!

so, on one side, when my DD latches, she nurses fine for the first minute or so, but my let down on this particular side seems to be MUCH faster than the other side (does that sound legit??).  I feel so bad for her-- she starts gulping faster and faster, until she is practically choking, and then she pulls off, screaming, and i'm spraying everywhere while trying to get her latched back on. after we go through this several times in a row, she seems to calm down, as my milk flow slows down... ughhh.... she is 2 and 1/2 weeks old, and I have already NIP a couple times.  One of the problems this is creating is a very terrible time NIP... I've got a screaming baby on-and-off for the first 5 minutes, milk spraying all over my clothes, and trying to re-latch 10 or more times before she gets calmed down. WHAT CAN I DO?! anything?! will my let-down on this side always be a geyser? if so, will she eventually just get used to having to chug during this time and not get so mad about it?

sometimes when i'm at home, i just let it flow for a bit into a burp cloth before i even try to re-latch her, but that doesn't help my NIP situation, because she is screaming while i'm doing this, usually.

thanks in advance for any advice you all can offer!

  • I had a similar situation going on and my LC recommended that I lean back in to a more reclined position so my letdown isn't like a garden hose into the back of LO's throat. It seems to work, and LO seems much more comfortable since I've started doing it this way. Worth a try! Hope it helps!

  • Latch her on, then let her come off when the flow starts getting too fast for her. Let the milk spray into a burp cloth until it slows down, then latch her back on. HTH!

  • I have always had a strong letdown on both sides.  I can say as they get older, baby will be able to handle it better.  He is still a little spit uppy when I nurse versus when he gets a pumped bottle and that's just how it is.  You can work on leaning back if you use a recliner to nurse.  Side lie nurse so that baby can let it dribble out the side (put a blanket under both of you) if it is overwhelming.  When they are small like your LO, you can football hold to get the nose higher than the nipple.  Basically you want to look for ways to work against gravity.  You may want to limit NIP until you get this better under control.  Some have posted that their let down regulated as the baby got older but I think mine has stayed the same.

  • I has that slightly too.  We did some block feeding for about 2 days and it slowed the slight over supply and fast letdown. Also helped with the green poos she was having.
