Breastfeeding

how did you know (allergy/sensitivity)

If your LO has an allergy/sensitivity and you had to give up something (dairy, etc) while BFing...

Did they experience symptoms from birth or was it something that came on later?

How did you know what the sensitivity was to?

ds had no problems. Last Friday he had a bottle of formula b/c I was out with the girls. He has suddenly had way fewer poops (as in all the time to one every couple of days). I called the pedi earlier this week and they said this was normal. He has been extremely gassy and it smells. They said this was due to the formula. He had 3 ounces a week ago so it seems odd that it would still be giving him stinky gas!

He's become way fussier in the last week. I think he thinks he wants to nurse but really he is just having tummy problems but he roots and wants to suck. I try the paci but he spits that out so I nurse but he is agitated and squirms and frankly - that hurts!

Could it be something coming in the milk causing trouble? "Normal" gas pains? Something else? Thoughts?

He has been gradually getting "better" or we are figuring out how to deal but it still seems like excessive crying.

Oh, and he likes to eat about every 2 hours except he sleeps AWESOME at night...I got a lecture from the pedi nurse that he is eating too often but I think that really he eats part of the time and uses me as a paci part of the time.

 WWYD?

Thanks!

Re: how did you know (allergy/sensitivity)

  • My DS does almost the same exact thing.  We went to a fussy baby clinic w/ the LC at our pedi office.  She found blood in his stool.  She said that he has a milk soy protein intolerance.  I started to cut all milk and soy out of my diet and after about two weeks we did notice a differnce.  LO still wants to nurse at least every two hours during the day and about every 3-4 at night.  I asked my pedi about that and she said to not worry about his schedule as long as he is gaining wt.  He does tend to have a lot of gas as well but he thinks that it is funny.  Although I do wish I could find a way to get LO to stop using me as a paci b/c I agree that hurts.  I feel bad for him b/c he gets to mad when he gets milk but he refuses to take the paci.  It will take me 4-5 tries before he will take the paci and go to sleep.

  • if my DD wasnt eating or sleeping she was not happy and she spit up a ton, had trouble going to the bathroom and would scream and scream.  I cut out dairy just to see if that would help and she turned into a different baby so no more dairy for me.  I tried to add some back in after a couple weeks and things with small amounts of dairy didnt bother her but when I ate pizza she was miserable the next day so now i just cut the major dairy things.  And my ped rec we use Similac Sensitive formula if needed versus reg formula or soy.  Good Luck
