Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Anyone's LO still on formula?

My ped rec'd that DS stay on BM or formula until he's 18 months.  As in: no cows milk until then.  I'm still BF'ing 4 or 5 times a day, but I'm headed back to work in a week (CRYING!), so I'm trying to wean him from his daytime feedings.  I'll still be nursing him overnight, in the morning, and before bed.

My question: how much formula are they getting?  I'm totally new to formula, so I'm kind of at a loss.  Any brand recs?

Thanks!

Re: Anyone's LO still on formula?

  • Did he give a reason why?  There's no need for formula past 1 year unless there's weight issues or something like that.  I would say there's even less of a reason if you're still going to be nursing morning at night.

That said - I give DS toddler formula a few times a week if we're out or he's having a crappy eating day.  I don't think there's a certain amount they need at this age since most nutrition should be coming from food.

  • We have DD on a mixture of formula and unhomogenized whole milk from grass-fed cows.  That way she gets the extra vitamins and iron in formula, and the healthy long-chain fatty acids from the cow's milk (which are only there if the cows eat grass, not grain).  DD is 16 months, btw.  We use the same formula we've used with her since birth - Baby's Only organic dairy formula (we order it through their website and it's shipped to our house).  It's fantastic; we've never had any tummy issues or gas from it, and she loves it, and it doesn't have that nasty DHA in it.

My ped rec'd that DS stay on BM or formula until he's 18 months.  Those are two totally different situations.  Staying on BM makes perfect sense.  What are the circumstances that would require your LO to stay on formula?  As in: no cows milk until then.  There are plenty of toddlers who drink NO cow's milk--due to allergy, intolerance, parents' values/preferences.  That's not necessarily an extraordinary situation.  It's perfectly normal (& many would say preferable & more natural) for your baby to continue drinking your milk rather than switching over.  I'm still BF'ing 4 or 5 times a day, but I'm headed back to work in a week (CRYING!), so I'm trying to wean him from his daytime feedings.  I'll still be nursing him overnight, in the morning, and before bed. Depending on your situation, that might be sufficient.

My question: how much formula are they getting?  I'm totally new to formula, so I'm kind of at a loss.  Any brand recs?  Are there specific concerns or something special about your situation that would prevent you from LO from consuming, food (including dairy products) & water while you're separated & drinking momma milk while you're together?  What is your pedi trying to achieve by having you introduce formula this late in the game?

    Thanks!

  • My Lo is on Pediasure. She had MPI/Soy intolerance up until 1. Due to that and other factors, she's a pretty small kiddo. So, the doc recommended pediasure because it has more cals. than WCM.

There was a possibility that she would have to go on some type of toddler formula if she continued to have trouble with milk products. Luckily, she seems to have gotten over it some where along the way.

  • Yes, our pedi recommended that he stay on it until 2 because of seeing too many toddlers have anemia or iron deficiencies, by switching too fast. He gets about 14 oz a day in a sippy. Sometimes more, but usually that is the norm. Our doctor is not strict on anything so we really followed her advice on this one. Good luck.
  • She's still on all formula.  I plan to start doing half and half starting next week (13 months), and will continue until her formula is gone, probably 3 more months.
