Announcing earlier than I wanted.

I know lots of people have been posting about announcing on facebook lately. I have an appt with my ob dr (I havent met him yet...looking forward to this appt!!) on August 16th. That is 3 Looooooonnnnggg weeks away, but I will be on vacation for one of them. I thought I would wait until I meet with him to announce to the world so he can tell me everything is ok. However, my sister-in-law is moving to Germany on Monday and will not be home until Feb to see the baby. She will be without contact to home for a bit (waiting for housing on a US military base) and I KNOW she wants to tell people on fb. I think I am going to let her and my sis announce on their pages and just assume it will filter to my friends soon after. I know its earlier than I originally wanted, but DH thinks its ok. I know the "magic date" is usually 12 - 13 weeks to announce. LO's heartbeat was 168 last week and my dr thought that was good and seems to think everything is good. I hope its ok!!

Re: Announcing earlier than I wanted.

  • If it makes you feel better, my mw told me that the chance of m/c in the second trimester drops to 3% . . . but once you hear/see the heartbeat in an u/s/with a dopplar during the first trimester, it drops to 5%.

So you are only working with a 2% difference.

  • Since you've heard LO's heartbeat I think you're safe to tell people. Of course the chance of miscarriage doesn't ever completely disappear but it sounds like you know LO is alive and kicking so why not? I had to tell at 10 weeks because of my job and I've been nervous ever since but so far so good!

  • We told our families and friends as soon as we found out. My thought was, if I miscarry I'm going to need the support of my family and friends to get through it. We're 12 weeks today and everyone knows, we've done the first Ultrasound and heard the heartbeat. Like the other person commented, once you hear the heartbeat the chance of miscarriage is very low. I don't believe in a "magic date" if you want to tell people (I'm not sure how you have kept it a secret so far) go ahead!

If everything is going fine I don't see a reason why you shouldn't tell. I told yesterday, and although I was a bit nervous at first, I decided to just let go... The odds are in our favor!

  • DO IT! :) we wanted to wait until we had our appointment with the doc on monday, 8/1, but as soon as we heard the hb on the home doppler, we figured we were good to let the good news fly!
