My mom's first cousin's son has a son named Luca. I know that doesn't sound like a close relative but we're a pretty close-knit family, even though we only see that cousin 2 or 3 times a year. (He's moved long distance.)

Re: Can I use Luke?
Thanks for the input... maybe I should have added, he's only 8. Does that make a difference?
No, I don't think it makes a difference. They don't have the same grandparents, I think that's what would have made me answer otherwise. You're good. I love Luke and Luca but my last name is DeLuca
It would be nice to pass the idea around a little bit, see if anyone wrinkles their nose at you, but that's a courtesy only. No one can tell you not to name your kid what you want to name him.
I see no problem with it, especially since it is a different name that just sounds similiar. I have a really big but relatively close extended family on both sides and a lot of the good, classic names (which is my style) are used already. In fact, our top three choices for girl names this time are all used by at least one distant cousin. My dad named my sister the first name as his first cousin, Amy, and then that cousin named her daughter the same thing as me, Maggie. Ryan is my maternal grandmother's maiden name and thus my mom has a first cousin named Ryan, a nephew Ryan and one of her first cousin's children is named Ryan. I could name many more examples of duplicates in my family.
I draw the line at first cousins though. I would not name my child the same name as one of my first cousins or any name that they use for their children since many of my first cousins are as close as siblings to me.
