Lactation room at my hospital..N/A..(repost from Nov)

Hello All, I am here because I need your advice. I work at a rehabilitation center in Atlanta and I love it there! I have an 8month old that I am still nursing and pump for when I am at work. The situation has gotten very annoying. I do not have a lactation room to pump in peace, I have to walk around and find a space, usually is the damily meeting room, I put a sign up and I pump. This works well unless there are people in the room, in that case my search continues.  I spoke to my supervisor and she was letting me use her office, on the weekends which was great! Until her PEN went missing and now she wants a security guard to stay after they open the door, and wait to close it. (Any one can call and get the door opened, we usually call to get supplies out, some others to get coffee, creamers, etc.)

I feel bad and embarrassed having a guy wait for me outside the room while I pump. maybe I shouldn't.

I wrote HR a very nice note explaining how this is very hard, and how we should promote breastfeeding by offering a clean, private room!!

They replied with this::

Martha

Thank you for your e-mail.  In the past we have always encouraged employees that wish to pump to do so and for the most part this has not been a difficult situation.  Being a hospital with 85% female employees most people are pretty good about assisting with this situation.  We do not have a room designated for such use as we are tight on space to begin with and all of our employees are pretty far spread so it has been left up to the employee and supervisor to come up with a plan that works best for all.
Having said that I know for you on the weekends, Sylvia has stated her office is free to be used by you for this purpose.  It is quiet and confidential and of course if you feel more comfortable you can put up a sign indicating privacy required.  During the week most people use either the Livingston Gym or Pool changing areas as they are comfortable, private, have a sink close by and electrical outlets.
So this should work for this situation for the next four months.  Also, please make sure that you clock in and out any time that you are pumping so that your department knows that you are not working during that time.

Please let me know if you have further questions.  Thank you!

I tried using the gym, and it was hot like a sauna since the heated olympic pool was right outside. The mats that I could use and sit, had HAIR all over them, and the electrical outlet does not work!

I am very frustrated! I emailed her a copy of the law, can they choose to not follow it??

Sorry so long!
