TTC after 35

Question for a friend (ticker warning)

Hi Ladies

My friend is 40 and has been TTC for 6 months. She sees her OB today. Due to cysts, she has had an ultrasound and knows that everything for her is in working order. Her DH has also had his sperm tested and he is good to go. She is ovulating pretty regularly and uses OPK sticks. I think I should tell her to request to see a RE (reproductive endocrinologist?). What else do you advise? Is clomid only for if you are not ovulating? Please let me know what she should be asking for and about at this appoinment. Thank you!

Re: Question for a friend (ticker warning)

  • I would vote she moves on to see an RE.  They need to do blood work to look at her ovarian reserve (FSH, E2, AMH).  They should also do an antral follicle count.  All of these pieces of information will give them a much better idea of how to proceed.  Clomid can make you produce more than 1 follicle/cycle, which can increase her odds of getting pregnant (although it can also increase the risk of multiples, so she needs to be monitored closely).  Hope that helps!

  • I would vote for an appointment with an RE as well.  At 40, there is no more time to waste & 6 months is more than enough time to try on your own.
