Dreamfeeding

Talk to me about dreamfeeding.  What is it? How and why do you do it?  Benefits/drawbacks?

Re: Dreamfeeding

  • As a side note, DS sleeps from 8 until 3 and then goes down until 6.  I usually change him before his 3am feeding.  Do you change LO at night?

I didn't used to change DS, but he seems to sleep better if I change him at his 4am feeding, so now he gets changed then (that's 8 hours after he first goes down).

Dreamfeeding is when you try feeding them when you go to sleep in an attempt to extend the time before their first wakeup. It doesn't work for everyone, though. I've never tried it because I'm afraid DS will think it's time to play instead of eating and going back to sleep. If your LO is sleeping till 3 before the first feed, it's probably not even necessary. 8-3 is medically sleeping through the night.

  • I do it right before I leave for work so she'll sleep a few more hours for my husband who works nights.  I don't change her and I'm really careful.  But it works well for us! She sleeps from 9:30-10 at night to around 9 in the morning, so I think the 6 AM feeding helps.
