Breastfeeding

Trouble eating and nursing

I'd like to know if anyone elses baby does this and if so, what they did to solve the problem!

My son is kind of fickle about breast feeding. Sometimes he'll nurse for awhile, get a full belly and sleep great. But sometimes he'll only feed for a few minutes (10 at most) then stop and not want to go back. When he does that, he wants to feed almost every hour. Of course I'm going to feed him when hes hungry but its incredibly inconvient to have to feed him hourly rather than every few. He also tends to fall asleep when feeding, and when he falls asleep he stops nursing. So, I've got to try and wake him up to get him to finish, which doesn't happen often as he's hard to wake up or to get interested in nursing again once he is awake...
Any suggestions??

Also, he's not much of a burper. I can feed him and pat him to burp for an endless amount of time and 90% of the time he wont burp. It hadn't been a problem until the last two days or so. Three times in the last two days he's spit up a massive amount shortly after feeding. So of course I can assume its from a need to burp, but I can't get him to! And, its not just me, no one can get him to burp.
Any suggestions??

I'm not sure if its relevant, but for the sake of details, he is typically given about an ounce of formula after he's breastfed (they wanted us to suppliment him due to weight loss before leaving the hospital). But, he doesn't spit up the formula any more or less than breastmilk. I could understand if he were spitting up from having too full of a belly, but this morning he spit up after nursing for only 10 minutes.

Help!

Re: Trouble eating and nursing

  • My daughter is the same way.  Some times she will eat really good and sleep for a few hours, other times she eats 10 minutes, falls asleep and then is back up in 50 minutes to an hour to eat again.  This usually will go on for a few hours.  My nipples get so sore when she does this.  As far as burping goes, I have to burp this baby in between sides and after she feeds.  Sometimes she will burp numerous times.  With my first, she hardly ever needed burped.  She would actually burp all by herself or rarely was gassy.  I find that if I start to move my daughter around even just leaning forward or getting up and walking with her, it tends to help her get her burp out.

  • DD does the same thing with nursing. For the past two days she's only gone for about 20 minutes in between feedings and boy are my nipples feeling it. Today she seems to be holding to a bigger gap though so I'm getting some relief.

She rarely ever burps with breastmilk but will need to burp every 1/4 ounce of formula (needs supplements due to dehydration). Maybe they just don't need to burp as much?
