Just found out about twins! 5 mo...Should I switch doctors

I have Tricare prime and I have been going to the doctors here at the hospital. I haven't had a great impression of them so far. They never seem to have time to explain things to me, they are always running behind, some of them are rude. I've had multiple ultrasounds and then I went in for a routine anatomy scan at 20 weeks and surprise! I'm having twins. One of my previous scans they even specifically checked for twins because I'm measuring large...So... Now I'm getting a little worried especially since everyone on the multiples board bit my head off because they said it's not normal for doctors to miss something like that. Should I switch to standard and find a different hospital? I'm worried about the cost if there are complications, but I want to get the best medical care I can. Twins makes this a little less routine..Thoughts?

So many people don't understand how Standard works. It does not cost a lot of money. I had an emergency c-section. The total bill was over $17,000. I paid $63 for the room fee. I loved my hospital and my doctor. If you aren't comfortable you should switch. Giving birth causes enough anxiety without adding to it by not being comfortable with your care.

I'm not really sure what to tell you other than go with your gut feeling. I have Prime and loved all of my care at the Navy hospital, but the doctors at yours sound pretty bad. Running late may just be par for the course though. My doctor was often late but he would apologize for it and I knew that he was very busy. And I know that it's possible to miss twins because sometimes one will "hide" behind the other. But as I said, you should go with your gut feeling. There is no excuse for rudeness. This isn't a time to feel uncomfortable with your medical care. If you feel you need to switch, look into it. Is it possible to change to a different doctor at the hospital? Or do you feel that this entire hospital is sub par? Good luck and congratulations on your twins :)

If you?re uncomfortable with the doctors I think you should switch to Standard and choose your own doctor or hospital. As pp said Standard doesnt mean you have to pay a lot of money since everything concerning your pregnancy is 100% covered.  Congratulations on your two LOs ;)

I switched to Standard halfway through this pregnancy, and I have no regrets. With that said, it really isn't that uncommon for twins to be missed. Sometimes, one hides behind the other. I wouldn't solely base my decision on that factor, but if you are unhappy with your care, switch. You won't regret it.

They didn't bite your head off, they were rightly skeptical, because numerous aspects of your story don't add up.  I mean, mo/di twins (as in the SHARE a placenta), but one was soooo far away from the other that it was missed on FIVE u/s's before now, one of those u/s's specifically looking for twins?  A rodeo clown could have found the second twin in that time, and while some OB's are incompetent as all hell, I'm assuming yours isn't blind, no?

I'm not saying you're not pregnant with twins, but the Multiples board gets a LOT of fakers.  They're/we're skeptical when stories just don't make sense, and for good reason.  We've dealt with a lot of shiit from people faking multiples pregnancies in the past.

And you said over there that you've already switched doctors to some kind of high risk "twins clinic" anyway, so if that's true, why wouldn't you give them a shot instead of just switching to Standard right away?  My high risk OB was nothing short of amazing, even though she was a military doctor.  You can't judge them all by a few idiots.

ETA - I accidentally typed that they share a sac when I meant to say placenta.  My brain is lost today, please don't mind me.  ;)

I agree with this.  I definitely got better care from the MFM docs, then the resident @$$clowns.  If you aren't comfortable with the new doctor, then I would definitely switch to standard.  Go with your gut.

Yes, go find another OB.  I have twins also and I had a lot of monitoring.  Twin pg is high risk and usually the average OB is not equipped to handle a twin pg.  More than likely you will be referred to a perinatologist or a MFM to monitor your pg from here on out.

I'm still SHOCKED they didn't see your twins in your multiple u/s's.  They found my twins at 7w with no problem.

Congrats!  Twins are a total blast!

Switch doctors based on how you feel about your current doctor, not based on what anonymous people said on the multiples board.

Just read your post on the multiples board. You're FOS. Next time you make up a story, make sure it makes sense before you post it.

I've decided to stay at current hospital for the month of August. I have quite a few appointments scheduled in the twins clinic . See if I feel more comfortable with the doctors there. If not. I'll start exploring my options at other hospitals. I'm not sure if the same doctors work in the regular OB office and with the high risk pregnancies. The person I saw after my ultrasound seemed to be a specialist. I don't know if that's who I'll see from now on.

I just want to say ONE thing.  My Brother and SIL were using IVF to concieve.  They went INTO their U/S knowing the probability of multiples.  The twins were not confirmed until week 16.  Jack (who is now a pudge) hid behind Ember.

With that being said, if your doctors were giving you multiple U/S, you were not getting "routine" care.  The Standard of Care for ob U/S in both the MHS and Civilian HMO world are TWO: one for gestational age and one at 20 weeks to evaluate the fetuses condition.  So you were getting extra special care and they were not being careless with your care.

As for running late, that will occurr at almost any provider you go to, especially OB/GYN (and peds) practices.  TOO many variables to be able to schedule appointments to the minute.  So going Standard and getting a civilian OB wont help you there.

And finally, rude is as rude does.  You SHOULD not accept bad behavior.  And if you do not feel comfortable with these people as your providers, dis-enrolling from Prime and using your Standard Option is best.

But make sure you are doing it for the correct resons.  Because while all of your OB care is covered, any issue not OB related (I paid for my pregnancy caused GERD issues) will cost you till you reach your CAT CAP.

I switched so I could see a Dr. off base. Just make sure you can switch back if you want without a lock-out period or you're OK waiting. (The baby is automatically on prime) If your husband is E1-E4, there's no lock-out period, but if he's E-5 or above, there's a year long wait before you can switch back.

As far as disenrolling, just fill out this form and fax it in. Mine was effective from the day they received my fax.

Good luck and congrats on your twins!

Likely true that one was hiding behind the other.  OP has stated that one was hiding further north - in her lungs.

OP, Leslie13510 is right.  MoMs come with a healthy dose of skepticism for a reason.

I couldn't have said it better! I went to standard there are a TON of rumors out there it is very cheap as far as the pregnancy. I paid $22.00 total. I loved my hospital, my doctor. Bottom line do it if you don't feel right about delivering on base.

Yeah there, is a year wait. Which is part of what gives me pause. I did go to my first official twins appointment today.  The doctor was really nice, appointment on time. Best of all babies look great! heartbeats were good, he said they had plenty of fluid surrounding them. My blood pressure was a little low but I think I'm dehydrated from moving. All in all I'm pretty happy. I'm booked for 5 appointments in the month of August. 1 growth scan and 4 check ups to see how the babies are growing. I guess I'll have a pretty good impression of how things work once this month is over. If everything goes well, I'd like to stay with my current hospital, it is the closest to us. If I'm not happy in September I guess I'll consider switching to standard.

If I got pregnant with twins now, I wouldn't go to the MoM's board about it. With under 300 posts and already having a set, I *know* I would be accused of lying, haha! There are lots and lots of very supportive twins+ message boards out there on the interwebz.

Oh good grief.  No, you would not be accused of lying because of your post count, and you wouldn't be the first to have more than one set of twins either.

Nobody came out and said she's a lying liar face who lies, just that her story is effin' crazy and pretty unbelievable, so they're skeptical about it.  Who wouldn't find the story she posted on the Multiples board hard to believe?  I mean, I try to give everybody the benefit of the doubt, and even I read it thinking that either her doctors were completely blind and had IQ's of about 25, or something was not adding up right.

I found out I was pg with my last pg with twins when I was 12 or 13 weeks along, it was my first appt. It was at a naval hospital, they did'nt switch me to a HR Dr. until I was 20 weeks and the only reason they did was because my twins were identical and they were afraid of Twin To Twin Transfusion Syndrome. Otherwise not really sure why they would transfer you to a HR doc? I know at my Naval Hospital they were very knowledgeable of Twins. I actually delivered my twins at 35 weeks at the Naval Hospital. But to each it's own :)
