male doctor?

Can someone tell my what happens at the 2nd prenatal appointment? I have to see a different doctor for that appointment and it is a male. While I don't question his doctoring, it does make me really uncomfortable if there is a pelvic exam. My normal OB is a women and I completely trust her. she wants me to meet the other doctors in case she isn't there for delivery. any thoughts?

Re: male doctor?

  • I don't think there will be a pelvic at the 2nd appt. I have a male doctor, and he didn't even do a pelvic at my first appointment because I just had a routine pap a few months ago. At my 2nd I will have blood drawn, pee in a cup, and get another ultrasound. I think we are also going to start talking about labor and breastfeeding classes, touring the birth center, etc.

I prefer male doctors to female so I'm totally biased.  I don't understand the fear of male doctors.  He's a DOCTOR, specially trained in OB/GYN issues. There's nothing to "worry" about if he does a pelvic (which, unless you haven't had a pap in awhile, there shouldn't be).  If your doctor wants you to meet everyone you should be comfortable with them.  My doctor was on vacation when DS was born and he was delivered by a man I had never even met.  Yeah, it wasn't the way I wanted but what can you do.

Sorry...I didn't see where you said you don't question his doctoring.  Ignore me :)

  • I love my male Dr. I have gone from woman to men and I have to say, I think the men are more gentle and just prefer it.

  • I definitely don't think they will do a pelvic at the second exam. Unless if you had an abnormal one last time. And the male doctors aren't scary. A little uncomfortable at first maybe, but they are professional, and you will see it isn't  a big deal. Think of how many times he does a pelvic/delivers a baby a week. :)

  • You're worried about a trained medical professional doing a pelvic just b/c it's a male?  You do realize there is the possibility of him delivering your LO, right!?  In which case, a pelvic exam will seem like child's place; he's going to have his hands all over your hoo-ha.  I would think it better to get to know him now than have him surprise you in delivery if you have a tendency to be uncomfortable with male OBs.

With that said, unless you are due for a pap (and didn't get one at your first) you only have internals near the end (and that's a finger or two to check your cervix, etc.

  • In most cases you'll have a physical if necessary (with pap) at the first appointment, then you shouldn't have to get undressed again unless there's a problem until 36 weeks.

  • I did not even have to get undressed at my second appointment, although my doctor did do a surprise u/s. If your doctor wants you to "meet" everyone in her practice, I have to assume that means there is a chance the male doctor could be on-call to deliver your baby. If a pelvic exam with him bothers you so much, perhaps you should reconsider this office??

  • I prefer male docs, mainly bc my Dad was a doc.  LOL  It just feels comfortable for me, bc it's all I've known.  At your 2nd, he will check BP, listen with doppler for baby's HB and ask you what's going on.  That's it;0)  You don't need to get undressed, just pull shirt up and pant waist down a little to get the doppler in there.  Maybe you'll feel more comfy with him after, bc if something happens, it could be him down there while you're pushing!  LOL;0)

I had a male OB the entire time with DD and then had a different male OB deliver her. I will have all different OBs this time although both appts so far I have had the same male OB.

It wasn't weird to have a male OB.  The first appt was a little uncomfortable but as soon as he gets into it and checks you out the weirdness goes away.  There are going to be a lot of people seeing your vagina and breasts over the next couple of months so do what you have to do to get past the weirdness.

The delivery was not weird at all but it would have been nice to meet him before I was a screaming mess.

    Good luck!

HAHAHAHAHA!!!!  LMBO!!!! SO TRUE!  By the end, I would get undressed automatically, no matter who was in the room.  I swear I didn't even notice anymore.  Student nurse needs to watch?  Sure.  Bring her in.  Just no pics, please.  LMBO

  • I had a pelvic exam at my second appointment. A male doctor performed it. He's the first male OBGYN I've seen, and it was the easiest pelvic exam and Pap that I've ever been through (and I've been getting them for ten years now).

You may as well get over an modesty you have. I'm not sure if you're aware of it, but when you give birth, at some point you will realize that your legs are spread wide open in front of a LOT of people. There were three nurses, my doctor, and my husband in the room when I delivered. How would you feel if a male nurse was on duty when you gave birth? It's no different. It's a person trained in obstetrics. Who cares what gender they are?

I have been going to my male doctor since 2004 and I love him! He's gentle, blunt, and let's you know exactly what he is doing.

At my second appointment which was yesterday I had my blood pressure checked, urine checked and a vaginal ultrasound.
