Safe weightloss and BFing

I have been losing about 2 lbs a week for the past few weeks, and while I am happy with this progress I want the weight to come off faster!  However I am terrified about my supply tanking.  How many lbs can I loose a week without it affecting my supply?  Also anyone have success with WW for BFing mothers?

  • Lots of posters on 9-12 have had success with WW and bfing, just make sure you eat enough points!

You would see your supply dropping within a day or two so then you can just add calories and lots of water. You should be fine.

  • I've been on WW for about 8 weeks now and I've lost around 5-6 pounds. According to them, safe weight loss for breastfeeding moms is about a pound a week without messing with your supply. You also get 14 additional points for EBF (7 if supplementing with formula).

Losing more than two lbs per week isn't safe for your body, much less for maintaining your supply. It's frustrating at times not to see progress faster, but you need to keep your health in mind. FWIW, I've been on WW twice now, and did see a drop in my supply the first week I started when I wasn't using all of my points. My supply rebounded when I ate enough to use them all every day. I've lost 15 lbs since the beginning of June, so it definitely works for me.
  • 2 lbs a week is great mama!  Give your body time.  That's the best way to lose weight & keep it off anyway.  I woudn't aim to lose more weekly or you will surely risk your supply.  Also, if you are too restrictive your milk won't contain all the nurients your baby needs.

  • Thank you for posting! I just joined WW to see if that could help speed the process.  I too am discouraged at how slow the weight loss is, especially because I am pumping/breastfeedng for two babies.  So far my weight loss has been about 4 pounds in 3 weeks,,,not as fast as I would like but I guess its something.  SOmetimes I feel like I have so many points that I just eat to fulfill them (I do not want my supply to drop).
