Detroit Babies

Coming for a visit

Hi Ladies...I'm usually on my local board for Northern California. I am hoping you can help me out with some local suggestions and recommendations.

My Husband, 18 month old and I are headed out to the greater Detroit area to visit family in September. While we will be spending the majority of time with them, we would like to do some of the "touristy" types of activities in the area.

What would you recommend? Museums, Landmarks, etc.

Thanks!

Re: Coming for a visit

  • Do you know what area you will be visiting and how far away(timewise) you are willing to travel?  The "greater Detroit area" is very large.
  • you could take a dinner cruise on the Detroit Princess. Sept is still pretty nice weather in Michigan and would ok for a tour. I personally have not yet been on it, but would love to go one day.

The Henry Ford Museum/Greenfield Village gets a lot of attention too. it's a fun thing to do.

You can take a trip up to Frakenmuth. you could even stay a night up there and do some outlet mall shopping at Birch Run. (it's the same exit i believe. one is to the left and one in to the right.

Some fun 1/2 day trips could be to downtown Ann Arbor, Royal Oak, Rochester (all different locations) and do some downtown shopping.

If you're in to baseball, you can have dinner at Hockey Town cafe' then head over to a tiger's game (they are directly across the street from one another.

If you have time northern Michigan is beautiful and well worth the drive. but that would go off if you have the time- then we can rec those places :)

Ditto all of this.  You can also visit the DIA, Detroit Historical Museum, The Science Center, and in Ann Arbor is the Hands on Museum which is a great place to take kids.

P.S. I LOVE Norther Cal :)  My aunt and uncle live just outside of Sacramento, I can't wait to take my DS there!

  • Detroit Zoo, which is lcoated in Royal Oak is nice.  If you want to get out of the sun and walk in a mall, Somerset Mall in Troy is gigantic.

The family we are visiting live in West Bloomfield. We were thinking of spending a day downtown-ish area or surrounding and seeing a couple museums and just checking out the sites. So, say an hour to hour and a half away?

Nesties/Bumpies are always so helpful and well informed...definitley wanted to hear your ideas and suggestions. =)

The Detriot Historical Museum's website said that they only do tours for groups of 15 and over. Is it a self guided tour normally?

I'm definitely going to see how far Ann Arbor is from where we're staying...I'd love to take DS to the Hands on Museum.

Sacramento is great. I grew up in the Bay Area (San Jose area) and moved up here after college. I love it. There is a ton for kids to do and so many day trips you'll have to make multiple visits. My SIL has definite seasons she loves bringing the kiddos out here so they can get a change of pace weather wise! If you ever need kid ideas or just suggestions for fun stuff to do on your visit(s)...feel free to come ask on the Nor Cal Bump board, everyone is really friendly and there are quite a few Sacramento gals. =)

You know what, I actually have no idea!  I've always gone with school or another group, never alone.  Sorry!!!

The drive from West Bloomfield to AA is probably about 45min I'd say, depending on traffic and where exactly in West Bloomfield you'll be staying.  In my opinion, it's totally worth it.  AA is a fantastic city to visit.

I'll definitely pop over once we decide to go out there :)  There is a ton to do, we couldn't even see everything we wanted to in 10 days!

  • Might be a bit of a hike from West Bloomfield, but the orchards and cider mills around here are lovely:

You're right!!! those are great! i'd highly rec going to a cider mill.

if you want a close one you can try Franklin's it's very close to your family. Although you don't get the full orchard feel, but it's definitely worth the tasty treats!!
