my LO is 4 weeks old today...and when awake she has never gone more than an hr and a half without eating...when can I expect this to start spacing out because I am exhausted... I finish feeding her and 45 mins later she wants to eat again.
I can't remember when the feedings started spacing out, but my daughter started eating faster around 6-8 weeks. It's so tiring the first few months. Just take it one feeding at a time. I always reminded myself, and sometimes I still do, that my baby will never be this little again, even tomorrow, and this is all just temporary. Hang in there!
If you find LO is eating more frequently than normal it may be the 4 week growth spurt. The early days are tough but it does get better. Baby is still getting this whole nursing thing figured out. That said when my LO finished the 1 month growth spurt I had a public health nurse come and check on our bfing. This was the best thing that I did to make nursing go better. They check the latch because if this is not good then LO could spend a long time nursing and not actually get a lot. They also taught me to watch to make sure that my son was sucking and swallowing. I was spending 1.5 hours nursing and a lot of that he was just sucking.. once I started using breast compressions, and trying to rouse him when he was only sucking not swallowing he became a much more efficient nurser. By 6 weeks he was starting to speed up and go longer between sessions. If you can have a professional check you bfing it might really help.. they may have some tips to help LO nurse more efficiently or maybe just some reassurance that you are doing everything right and LO just needs a little more practice.
