no weight gain normal?

During the first few weeks of my pregnancy I lost about 2-3lbs due to lack of appetite and MS.  I just assumed I would gain those lbs back (and then some).  My last ultrasound was at 8wks 6 days and the baby was measuring right on schedule so I haven't been too concerned but I am about 11 weeks now and still haven't gained anything including the two lbs I lost.  I guess I am just curious if this is normal? thanks!

Re: no weight gain normal?

  • I think it's pretty common. I think it's really dependent on how rough your m/s is though- I'm down a total of 8 pounds and still haven't gained anything back. My dr. said that it's fine for the first trimester. From what I've heard, once you get your appetite back in the second trimester, there won't be any problem gaining the weight!

  • I lost 15 w/DS and didn't gain it back till last two months of 3rd trimester.  And most of THAT was water retention.  I don't think they expect you to gain much, yet, either.  That's more later in pregnancy, before they start to worry about not gaining...

  • With DD1 I didn't gain anything my entire first trimester.  After that I put on about a pound a week.

I haven't gained any weight with this one yet, and am assuming it will be fairly similar to the first time.

  • Yes, its fine. The baby is so small anyway so really any substantial weight you would put on would be in your boobs or belly at this point.  It will even out in the 2nd tri.

  • it's normal for me, at least.  .  As long as your baby is growing on track, I bet your doc won't be too concerned. I think it also depends on your size to begin with though.  I've actually lost almost 10 lbs so far, which is a good thing as I'm overweight to begin with, so i need to limit my weight gain.

  • Jealous.. haha : ) I think I've gained too much as is, so am gonna have to really watch it as I get into 2nd trimester. Makes perfect sense to me. In my case, my MS only was there in the beginning and I even cured it by eating a lot back then.
  • I'm not as far along as some of you, but I'm also down about 5 pounds, and I'm pregnant with twins.  Haven't seen a doctor yet (hurry up Friday!) but the nurse wasn't concerned.

Thanks ladies, you definitely reassurred me.  I figured it was so early that I would gain it back in a month or two, but one of my friends told me I shouldn't be losing weight so I got worried.

  • It's pretty common, actually. At my last checkup, I was down five pounds or so from my regular weight, and I haven't gained a bit of it back. I'm not vomiting much at this point, just eating differently and much smaller portions. With my first, I actually lost nearly 20 pounds from hyperemesis, and I didn't catch back up until the beginning of the third trimester.
  • I think that is perfectly fine this early. I have only gained 1 pound and the doctor said that was great today.

  • My doctor told me I should only gain about 5 pounds in my first trimester. That's not very much, so I wouldn't really worry about not gaining any.

I'm with you.  When I saw the scale this morning, my eyes nearly popped out of my head.  This bloating sucks!!!!!

  • I haven't had much MS but I've hovered around the same weight for a few weeks now. I was so stressed out after finding out about this surprise, I lost about 5 lbs, but those came back. I'm right around what I started at, so I'm proud of myself. I'm just trying to keep exercising as often as I can. Nothing too strenuous though, just a bunch of walking on the elliptical. I know I should cut back on the splurging though...I have quite a few weaknesses when it comes to sweets.Embarrassed

  • Yep, totally normal.  I haven't yet gained any weight either -- and I'm happy with that.  I gained about 40lbs with DS and I'm trying to keep it under 25 lbs this time around.  Just keep eating when you feel hungry and drinking lots of fluids.  :)

    Good luck!
