Visiting a First Time Mom in Hospital

My sister-in-law is being induced this evening and the baby is expected to arrive sometime tomorrow. This is her first child and my first niece.

I would like to take something when we go visit tomorrow, but I'm not sure what. I don't really remember what or if anyone brought us anything when we had DD - which is okay, I'm just not sure what is appropriate.

Also, I'm thinking something inexpensive.

Thanks for any tips! =]

  • I always like to bring flowers or have one of the edible arrangements with fruit delivered.  Yum!

  • People visited when I was in the hospital after our boys were born. They brought gifts but the only ones I remember were the snacks for me! :D If you know what sort of yummies she likes, that is a nice gift. Or toiletries or a robe to make her feel special.

Something yummy to eat maybe!!!  When I had DS I didn't eat for 2 days!  I had to be on a liquid diet for a day after he was born due to medication I was on.  Not to mention the hospital food is not always amazing.

I think some yummy bagels or muffins or something like that would be awesome.  It is also not something that needs to be taken home (like flowers or other gifts).

  • Yep food.

I had a friend bring pizza and beer, soooooo good.  A former roommate brought DH and I turkey sandwiches from their leftovers, way better than the hospital food.  Does she have a favourite food or restaurant, or something she has been waiting to eat her entire pregnancy, sushi?

Oh, man, my friend got me one of those edible arrangements once. It was amazing! So delicious.

  • I had a friend bring me a nursing gown.  It was a great gift. Another brought me yummy lotions.  Your hands get so dry since you wash them 1,000 times a day. Just call her before you visit and ask what she is craving.  Or if you know one of her favorite foods go ahead and pick it up.
  • My Mom brought a HUGE laundry basket FULL of diapers, baby wash, towels, diaper cream, lotion, petroleum jelly(for circ), gauze pads, pads for me, baby powder, wipes, easy snacks people could grab and go, baby tylenol, gas drops, a 1st aid baby kit w/thermometer, etc, etc, etc.  But my fave thing was "her cookies!!!!"  Mom cookies!  Whoo Hoo!  And she made a TON to share with nurses, etc;0)  If you want inexpensive...  Maybe get some baby bath stuff and make cookies.  Mama and baby covered.  Also, look up "lactation cookies" if she's going to nurse and make her those.  No ones else will think to and they help milk supply!  And taste good, too....

  • My FAVORITE things people brought were all food items. Trail mix, small snacks I could just much on and pop in my mouth. I also LOVED that people brought me casseroles and dishes to freeze, but that was possible at the first visit since Henry was born at home.  I honestly think something small for mom or a onsie is fine- then bring them something they can eat once they get home! (or if you are very close, just go put it in the fridge/freezer for them.)

  • So funny how we're all on the same page: FOOD!  After our 9 year old was born, my sister brought me a white mocha from Starbucks.  After being off caffeine for 9 months it was heaven in a cup!

  • I had a friend bring me a cookie cake and it was awesome!!
  • I always like to bring a bottle of Champagne but that is also because my friends and I like to do girls nights with some Champagne when we can.  Its a nice way to celebrate if the hospital will let you have a small glass and share it with the people there.

  • My favorite gift I got in the hospital was a "birthday cake" for my new DS to celebrate "0". It was sooooo good to have cake after all that hard work!

  • If you can think of something small that the new mom likes to eat, take that! My husband's boss actually visited me in the hospital the day after my daughter was born and brought me a pack of Reese's cups. May sound like nothing, but I was STARVING and so happy to get them. She also brought a congratulations-type balloon that was attached to a small stuffed animal for the baby.

It's really hard to judge, though, because you know her and we don't. Obviously don't take flowers if you know she has bad allergies or something.
