Working Moms and Pumping ??

Hi-

So, I go back to work tomorow (a teacher) and have a couple questions for you other working moms.
I am an EPer and wonder what I should do when I go back.  How many times do you pump at work?  How long?  Did you change any of this when you went back to work? (ie - less frequent or less time)

I am just nervous how this will all work out, so any tips/advice is appreciated! TIA

  • I started off 3x a day but had to up it to 4x when DS went through a growth spurt. Now I'm back down to 3x, although on occasion I've been able to get away with two. I pump for 20-30 minutes each time using a handsfree bra and hospital grade pump. My boobs don't respond well so I have to go that long in order to produce enough for the next days bottles.

  • I nurse DS right before I take him to daycare. I pump every three hours once at work so if I nurse him at 6am then I pump at 9, noon and 3. It only takes me about 5-10 minutes to pump the 4-5oz I need each session. I know it takes others a lot longer though. I know you'll probably have a little bit more difficult of a time since you're a teacher but I wpuldnt give up and try not to skip any sessions. Try and prep your pump parts before you leave in the morning just so you don't spend a few minutes putting everything together.

I'm also a teacher and pump before the first bell, during my conference, and after the final bell. I've also done a session during lunch, but cut it out early on since I was producing enough during the other sessions.
  • I go back on Tuesday so we will see how it works. But my "plan" is 10 min in the morning 20 at lunch and 10 in the afternoon.

  • My goal is to pump 3 times at work. If I get busy, its only twice. So far it has yet to affect my supply. When I go longer lengths, I just get more that session and I make sure to keep going a couple of minutes after the last drop. Honestly, it hasn't been bad for me and is totally worth the effort.

Fyi.. I wear my homemade hands free sports bra underneath my regular nursing bra. I pump at my desk while working. Usually it only takes me 15 to 20 minutes. I get plenty of milk for the next day and can usually freeze whatever I get from my night session before going to bed.
