Babies: 9 - 12 Months

hey, poster that turned your baby forward facing at 9 months...

yeah, this needed another post.

i'm also in texas. as you've been told you interpreted the law WRONG.

you need to turn your kid back around.

my friend just lost his 11 month old daughter yesterday morning. he was driving on a fairly rural highway, hit a pothole, blew out his tire, lost control and hit a tree. his car basically exploded.

the baby died on impact. she was still rear facing. what happened to him was an awful tragic accident, but at least he was trying to keep her protected. you never know what will happen out on the road.

you are putting your child in danger. as parents we should ALWAYS try our best to protect our children.

  • Oh my gosh, that is a nightmare. I am so sad for him. My prayers to him and his family!

  • Butting in: FWIW, after reviewing recent recommendations, we plan to keep our LO rear facing until age 2.  My job as a parent is to keep my LO safe.

  • That is terrible. My thoughts and prayers go out to that family.

It is our job as parents to do all we can to keep our LOs safe! We are going to RF until age 2 (unless of course out tall LO surpasses the height guidelines)

  • Oh my gosh. My thoughts are with your friend and his family. What a sad situation.

I have found that most people that don't follow the recommendations are doing so because of the "we didn't and we all survived" mentality. Obviously, it is different if you child has outgrown the seat, but I would say that is extremely rare at 12 months of age. I have a friend from high school that switched his little one around 8 months, and when I told him that he was breaking the law, he replied with " eh, he looks like he is 12 months old. No biggie".

When my DD was little, we had someone on this board that switched her 9 month old forward facing, and she was ripped a new one. I have never seen her post since. Sadly, I doubt that she listened and turned her back.

  • My thoughts and prayers are with your friend and his family in this tragic time. We are planning on following the most recent recommendations that state rear facing until 2 or they max out rear facing weight of car seat.

I agree that we should ALWAYS put our children's safety at the highest priority. I do not care that my child will have to most likely cross their legs, look funny or does not like rear facing. She must be safe at all times.

  • Well, for that "we survived" argument, I rode in my mothers arms in the backseat and my sister in the front seat with my mom holding her and we both survived. Of course, we didn't get into a wreck on the way home either, because if we had, we would have been so screwed. OMG, if there are things out there to make life safer for your child, why the fvck wouldn't you use it, especially for something that huge.

My deepest condolences to your friend. Losing a family member is difficult enough even when it isn't someone so young and innocent. I couldn't even begin to imagine what he is going through.
