XP: Green poop - what does it mean?

Also posted on June boards, thought this board would have some good answers also!

My son has been having green poops for almost 2 weeks now. They usually have mucus in them and also seedy like normal breastfed babies. He will normally have a couple of "normal" yellow seedy ones a day but the rest are green. His bowel movements also increased per day since he started having green ones from around 4/day to 8/day. He is eating well, gaining weight well, and no fever. As for fussyness not sure if it's just his norm or not - I'm still trying to figure out his personality :) I have spoken with a Lactation Consultant a couple of times, went to a breastfeeding group, talked to a nurse at the pedi office (who said it was all normal), and written a couple of post on the breastfeeding message board and I am getting all different answers: foremilk/hindmilk imbalance, milk protein allergy, virus, or that it's normal - I don't know what to think anymore!

I have been block feeding for the past week and have seen no difference so not so sure it is a hindmilk issue - do I need to try longer? I've even considered just EPing so that I make sure I get the hindmilk out - does this work for anyone? I'm also wondering if it is an allergy - what have your experience's been if it was a milk protein allergy? I have noticed a rash on and off on his arms (no where else) but think it maybe just a heat rash. He snorts once in awhile but I'm not sure if it's congestion. (I've read these things are symptoms of an allergy).

I feel like I am going CRAZY with all of this and seriously considering quiting breastfeeding at times because of it but really don't want too! Are his poops normal and I'm overreacting??? Thoughts appreciated!

FYI my son is 7 weeks old.

Re: XP: Green poop - what does it mean?

  • I don't know about some of your other questions but my LO has a milk/soy protein allergy and you can definitely tell something is wrong when you feed. I was an EPer and he would be extremely fussy and pained while eating, screaming out and pushing the bottle away, only to make the hungry "O" mouth again a few seconds later. Then he started getting blood in his stools. It's just red flecks but that's enough to tell us what he had. We've since switched him to Nutramigen, a hypoallergenic formula, and he's doing MUCH better.

That being said, when he was exclusively on BM, I remember that his stools would go between being yellow and seedy to green and clumpy or just green and pasty, and even sometimes a little brown. It's totally normal. If he seems okay while he eats and he's at least eliminating on a regular basis, there's no need to be concerned. You should be good! :)

  • personally i have never heard that a child can react to the hindmilk vs foremilk.. but i never did enough research.

The two things that stands out is the rash and congestion -those are two major signs of an allergy.  my son was about 5 weeks old when he started reacting like that also.  The rash eventually turned into blisters and then started swelling all over (for 7 months before we figured out it was my milk -i'm a bad mommy).

Where on his arms is the rash? is it in the creases? does he itch any part of his body?

Many mom's avoid dairy / soy for a month to see if it's better and then re-introduce it to see if the symptoms come back.   Perhaps trying eliminating some things from your diet to see if that helps.  This will also tell you if it's an allergy or not.

  • I would try cutting dairy and/or soy out of your diet for a couple of weeks to see if it helps.  The increased frequency and mucous sound like a food intolerance to me.
