Breastfeeding

I need help...Two questions

I am an EP'er. For the past few days I have been having some engorgement in my left breast. It is only on the left side of my breast and localized. I was thinking it was a clogged duct but no matter how much I pump, massage, warm compression, ect I do, it will not go away. It is getting engorged after about 3 hours. I usually pump every 4 1/2 hours during the day and go 6 hours at night without. I have tried to pump as much as possible the past few days but nothing is helping. Any suggestions? What can I do? I don't need it turning into an infection. Oh and when I do pump I pump that side for about 25 mins or until nothing else is coming out and I feel empty.

Next questions... Is this thrush? My nipples are always pink/red and sometimes after I finish pumping they itch. It's only around the base of my nipple. I don't have any problems with my areola or anything like that. It's only for a few minutes and then it goes away. But they are always tender to the touch.  I have EP'ed since day 5. Is it friction from my pump or could it be thrush? And if it could be thrush what do I do to confirm/treat?

Re: I need help...Two questions

  • First Question: Sounds very similar to my experience, I tried everything I could but it never seemed like thinks were truly "normal". I finally called my doctor and she decided I had mastits, I took antibiotics and everything cleared up. I would say it wouldn't hurt to call your doctor just to see what they think.

Question 2: I don't think I have any words of wisdom here. Sorry.

  • 1- I agree. Call your doc or LC. Also, keep in mind that you are spending a lot of time trying to empty. The more you empty, the more it will produce, thus increasing your supply and possibly making the problem worse. I've had it happen several times and each time what I have done is put tons of pressure and massage during pumping and or in the shower..along with pumping at random intervals to try to catch up. 2- I had the same problem. My LC originally thought it was thrush, but after talking more and her seeing it, she diagnosed me with Reynaud's Syndrome and told me to pump/bf in warm areas/clothed, etc. She also suggested that I use Lanolin with every pump and get larger shells. It did seem to get a little better over time but only a little. Hth
  • I agree with pp - keep doing what you are doing but see a doctor or LC  if it doesn't improve.

I had no issues with thrush so I'm not sure what it is... However, could just be your nipples adjusting to breastfeeding.
