Food Allergy

wheat testing?

I am allergic or intolerant to wheat, it gives me serious stomach cramps and (TMI) diarrhea as well as makes me exhausted and makes my Fibromyalgia act up.  We had LO avoid wheat for the first two years of his life on Dr recommendations and have now this week started him trying wheat out to see if he can handle it or not.   We started Sunday and he did fine, had a normal poop.  Monday normal poop, Tuesday NOTHING, Wednesday morning LOTS of soft poop, today-no poop until the evening, small appetite (he has no set appetite, one day he could eat an adults thanksgiving dinner the next he eats like a bird...) really moody and fussy in the evening...  I tried tickling his tummy and he laughed (I would think if it hurt he would have cried not laughed)...  today he is REALLY snotty, his nose is running A LOT.  I am just wondering if I am dealing with a reaction to wheat or if I am just dealing with a 2 year old with seasonal allergies or teething....(he gets a runny nose and coughs with teething too, but I don't feel anything "2 year molar" wise yet)

TIA!

Re: wheat testing?

  • That sounds "reactiony" to me.  That's the course my kids take on certain things - sometimes the reaction is immediate and obvious; sometimes it takes several days to set in and can be mistaken for a cold.  One thing that differentiates it for us is the color of the snot:  if it's clear, it's related to food.  If it's yellow/green, it's a cold/virus.  Also, stool quality.  Reactiony stools for them are mucusy, runny, or rock-hard.  This is just how OUR kids roll, it's not a doctor-approved diagnostic tool.  :)

I would remove the wheat for several days and wait for him to get back to normal.  Then reintroduce it and see what happens.  GL!

  • I am a celiac (gluten) and although my digestive system acts up I also get a really bad stuffed up nose, headaches and cranky.

I would try what the pp suggested with the removal and reintroduction.

  • Thank you both for responding.  FI came down this morning and said "LO still hasn't pooped? (it's been almost 48 hours)  Take him off the wheat!"

So we are going to take him off the Wheat for 2 weeks and then try again after he has had a chance to get better.  If he has the same reaction, we know it is wheat related if not, then we know it was a cold.
