Uh Oh...glucose **Updated with Blood results**

I went in for my glucose test today...didn't change the way I eat at all before going in and I got the urine analysis back...not the blood draws but for the Urine Analysis it says,

Glucose, UA  My range: 100  Standard range: 0-29

I'm thinking that's a big ruh roh! :(

ETA: I did do the urine test AFTER I drank the sugar drink but I don't think it would cause that big of a jump!

did they mean for you to do the urinalysis right after drinking the glucose syrup or was that their processing error.  I don't know much about the glucose tolerance test process for this early in pregnancy.

  • They had me go straight back to drink the drink.  So after I drank the sugar drink, I then did the UA.  I'm not sure if that's right but I didn't have any choice since they sent me straight back.  But I'm wondering even though I drank the drink before...could it really make that much of a difference?  That's SO much higher than the standard range!

  • Hmm I took my test early but it was a blood test. I hope you do not have to join the GD club:(

I did the blood test too...I don't have those results back yet.  I should have them tomorrow.  I'm crossing my fingers!

  • Hmmm...I don't recall having to do a UA when I took the test in the first tri.  Do you know why they ordered it?

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that your bloodwork comes back normal.  Keep us posted on the results!

  • Typically one does not have any glucose in the urine. the body does not process sugar that way,  sugar gets stored or burned. I would not panic yet though, it needs to be repeated and everything else, the glucose tolerance testing most likely too. Maybe the normal values are different during pregnancy too?

  • I'm hoping the blood results say that you're GD free. Fingers crossed for you!

  • Hmmmm.  They had me do the UA then go back and drink the glucose drink because they were adamant that I do as little movement as possible for my test.

I would wait for the blood test and to hear from your doctor.  If you need more info you could always email your doctor sooner than later. =)

GL, hoping you have a smooth pregnancy (including hoping the hypermesis subsides fast)

  • The UA was part of the 1st trimester bloodwork...there was a bunch of other stuff they tested in that UA too...the glucose was the only number off.

I got my blood results back and I failed the 1 hour.  Now I am waiting for the REI to call me back to find out what I do next.  It sounds like I'll have to do a 2 hour test next.  Still waiting for that call though...we'll see.

I am sorry. Hopefully you don't have GA and the fail was a fluke.

So did I read your original post correctly, they didn't have you fast beforehand? If that's the case then it's not uncommon for your numbers to be elevated.

I've got my fingers crossed for you that you're not going to have GD. If you do though, I have to tell you that it was a lot more liveable than I thought it was going to be. GL!

  • I didn't fast.

For breakfast I had a banana nut muffin and then a mid morning snack I had a half a banana.  For lunch I had a chicken burrito with spanish rice and pinto beans (flour tortilla).

I went to the lab about 45 minutes after I finished my lunch.

Muffin, banana, rice, flour tortillas...all of them are super high in carbs and there wasn't a ton of protein mixed in with all of it. Honestly, I think it's no wonder you failed the test. Make your appointment with the lab first thing in the morning and fast for at least 10 hours next time. I don't think you have to worry.

There is no way I can fast and drink that drink...I'll get sick.  No doubt.

I was trying to just not "cheat" and just eat like a normal day...what I ate is literally what I eat nearly everyday because it's what my stomach can handle right now.

I think I'll go in the morning next time, like you suggested, but maybe eat some whole grain toast with peanut butter...or scrambled eggs and whole wheat toast.

If you're going to have to eat something (totally understand that one) then I would suggest staying away from the carbs all together and only having the protein...scrambled eggs, bacon if you can stomach it. If you do feel like you have to have the bread to keep the meal down, try for one piece only and load it up with real butter. The protein and fat will help keep your blood sugar level. And I'd also make sure they know that you've had to eat because it will change your results.

It is a fasting test. I did it last week and they couldn't stress enough about how I couldn't eat anything for 12 hrs. I saw online that some places say 8-12. My dr might want to make sure there are no chances of it being skewed. They said if you throw up, you have to do it all over again. I'm sorry if you have problems with not eating. I definitely do too but I got through it. It just REALLY sucks because you have to sit in the waiting room for all 2 hours. If you eat, it throws off the test which is why they say you have to fast :( I'm sorry.

  • Thanks for all the info and support everyone!

I am going in tomorrow.  It's a 3 hour test.  They are having me fast for 10 hours.

Since I am sick, they are allowing me to do something a little different than the drink.  I go in at 9, they will draw my blood and then I am going to eat a jelly sandwich (wonder bread with 5.5 tbsp of smuckers grape jelly).  Then they'll draw my blood at the 1, 2 and 3 hour mark.

I'll be able to tolerate the sandwich more easily than the drink so I am glad they have that option for me!

Here's hoping I pass this time!
