one bedroom apartment?

Anyone living in a one bedroom apartment with their little one? If yes, how long do you plan on staying in a one bedroom? How are you making it work for your family? My husband and I are currently in a one bedroom and our lease is up in september so we were about to get a two bedroom when we realized we could probably make it work in a one bedroom. How long have you shared a bedroom with a child? Do you think it's feasible to share a bedroom until a child is 14 months old approximately? We're currently in ny and rent is insane for a decent place out here.

Re: one bedroom apartment?

  • We are in a bit of a different situation...2 bedroom but baby #2 on the way. DS stayed in our room until 6 months. Personally, I would not want a 14 month old in my room with us. At 6 months we were ready for it to just be us and have our time back. You could do, but it might add stress on your and DH relationship...or it might not. Just something to think about.

  • we are a little better off than you - we have a two BR house, but we will soon have 3 girls in one room, ya know, triple college dorm style :)  our plans are to try to make it work for about 4 more years - wish us luck!

as for sharing a room with baby, it is great at first when they are up all night, but gets old quickly - you just need your own space.  do you have a big closet or a hallway that could accommodate a crib (even a mini-crib, if necessary).  babies make a lot of noise at night and i have always believed they do better and STTN sooner when left alone after the 2 1/2 -3 month mark.

  • I am not in your situation, but I can tell you that you do not want a 14 mos old sharing a room with you and DH.  Maybe you can do something creative with the family room area.

  • Every family is different. Kids having there own room from birth is totally a cultural thing. Parents have been sharing rooms with there little ones since the beginning of time. When I had my first son he had his own room but I put a twin size bed in it for me to sleep in  for the first year because I was worried about SID's and it made nursing easy.  Our second is on the way and we'll have her in our room for the next 2 years while finishing grad school. We have a couple other rooms that we could turn into a baby room but my husband and I would rather keep our office and dining room.

If I was paying rent in NY I would just stick with the 1 bedroom for the next 14 months. Every family is different just know that it's not crazy or impossible, and it is actually the norm in most parts of the world.

  • When I had DS, DH (who wasn't Dh at the time) and I didn't live together so I shared my bedroom with DS.  He slept in the same room as I did until last September so he was 2 years 4 months.....Granted it was just the two of us, not three, but we did fine that way and when we got our 2 bedroom he transitioned perfectly....
  • I personally couldn't do it, but our best friends back home in NY live in a studio approx 450 sq ft. with their 1 year old.  They make it work.

  • I think if you are ok with the space, then it should be fine!

We're in a 3br duplex and feel pretty cramped :( Then again, we have 2 enormous beasts that we call dogs, sucking up all our living space.

  • all the baby experts we've met with have been adamant that our baby be in our room for a minimum of 6 months so i think doubling it would be ok if it was really necessary. i think you guys will be ok to stay another year or so.
