Done pumping for #1...what to do to "deep clean" pump

I stopped pumping for #1 a couple of weeks ago (but still BF 2x a day) and am also newly PG with #2 (due late March) and plan to BF/pump for that little one.

(Used the Medela PIS, also have a single Medela travel one but name is escaping me.

Just wondering what's the best way to set aside my pump and deep clean it for the next few months. I would obviosuly clean thoroughly again once #2 is here and before I pump.

I'll get new hoses.  Wondering if I should do the same with the storage tubes (mainly used the Medela cylinders).

Any advice?

TIA

  • I would just wash the bottles/storage tubes in the dishwasher (why wouldn't you reuse those for #2? That crap is expensive!), along with all of the breastshields/valves/connectors and wipe down the pump including under the faceplate (let dry before putting  back on).  Wipe down the outside of the bag, vacuum out the inside.

Take the batteries out of the adaptor if they are in there (best for storage) and just get new tubes and valves to ensure best suction.

  • Just read an article about this on kellymom.com. They suggest sterilizing the parts with steam after you wash them. Not sure if that's OK with your pump, but they mainly referred to Medela pumps in the article. Otherwise, I agree with PP. I stored all of my parts in a ziplock bag to keep them extra clean for long-term.
