keeping baby awake on way home from grammas

I am not that far from daycare but i am about 20 mins away from my MIL's house. She watches them 3 days a week. I get there at 5pm and she is just feeding them. I have asked her to feed them earlier so that they are ready when i get there. Goes in one ear and out the other. But anyway, it's almost 6 when i'm getting home and they go to bed at 7 so i have to keep DS awake on the way home. DD doesn't usually fall asleep. I have to yell at him and shake his carseat, open the window etc. i feel so bad but if i don't it messes up the whole night.

Any tricks you do to keep your LO's awake on the ride home?

  • I have this problem a lot if I go out with the kids in the afternoon. Lucky for me I have the assistance of my loud mouthed 3 year old who I can have talk to the baby and keep her occupied so she doesn't fall asleep. If that doesn't work, I will put the window down every once in awhile and she thinks that is pretty cool. I will give her a mum or a sippy cup of water too to keep her occupied or a toy that makes noise.

  • I have no idea what I would do.  It is a 20 minute ride from our day care or my mom's (she goes to both places a couple times a week) but she ALWAYS falls asleep on the ride home.  Luckily, it doesnt screw up our night and she still goes to bed easily.

This is probably a terrible suggestion, but what about a DVD player?  Just something enough to keep his attention for the ride home... not like you are sitting him in front of it all day or anything.

    Good luck!

lol believe me i've thought about it. Maybe when i get them in the convertible carseats and they are facing forward this is a good idea. I'm not opposed to them watching sesame street. They love that. Thanks for the tip!
